*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for the final episode of Hostage.*
In the last installment of Hostage, the primary narrative arc of the season concludes, yet it appears to set the stage for additional plot developments.
After the shocking revelation of Sylvie’s (Isobel Akuwudike) killing of Shagan (Martin McCann), the storyline moves ahead by three months, showing Abigail (Suranne Jones) announcing an unexpected general election.
She takes this action to strengthen the trust between herself and the British public, and it’s evident that her team and family support this move. By concluding Hostage in this manner, there is certainly room for further development.
In our conversation with the original creator, Matt Charman, we discussed the potential for another season of Hostage, and he indicated a strong interest in further developing the storyline.
“Yeah, if we were lucky enough, I’d love to take this story on.”

When questioned if season 2 might involve another hostage crisis (similar to the series title), Charman replied: “Actually, ‘hostage’ can have various interpretations. For me, when considering the show, I don’t primarily focus on Alex, but rather the two main characters played by Suranne and Julie.
The focus here seems to be on those individuals who are being held captive, threatened, and manipulated. By delving deeper into the concept of a ‘hostage’, which signifies being subjected to another’s power or control, we can potentially uncover more insights.
It’s quite likely that Hostage will feature Suranne Jones in its next season, as Charman has expressed his enthusiasm for working with her again. He stated, “I adore collaborating with Suranne; I’d be up for anything with her,” suggesting a strong possibility of their future collaboration.
In a new development, Jones makes their debut on Netflix, starring as the lead actor in a five-episode series, and additionally taking up the role of executive producer for the project.
In the climax of Hostage, there’s a possibility of a general election taking place. If a second season ensues, it might be that Abigail is re-elected. Alternatively, she could embark on an altogether fresh political career journey for herself.
In any upcoming episodes, it would surely be intriguing to observe the role or implications of the term ‘hostage’.
He stated: “What happened around Sylvie was deliberate, as I believe the effects of that situation – much like endless ripples in water – just keep on going.
Performing an action that profoundly transgresses moral boundaries can lead to ongoing emotional turmoil and self-identity crisis, leaving one questioning their very essence – ‘Who am I now?’ and ‘Who was I before?’ This scenario could provide an intriguing insight into the impact on a person’s development during their transition into adulthood.
