Initially, the initial three stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe converge towards a single climactic moment. Once Red Skull extracts the Tesseract from its secret location in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the chase to uncover the mysteries surrounding the Infinity Stones begins. Primarily, Thanos is the one driving this quest; he dispatches Loki to seize the Space Stone in “The Avengers” and later assigns tasks to Ronan the Accuser in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” However, as his minions repeatedly fail him, Thanos becomes impatient and decides to take charge. His assault on Thor’s spaceship in “Thor: Ragnarok” paves the way for “Avengers: Infinity War,” where characters from the entire MCU unite for the first time.
The anticipation leading up to “Infinity War” was certainly intense. There were endless discussions about which characters would team up and how they’d handle confronting Thanos. From the looks of the movie trailer, it seemed like they had quite a challenge ahead. Interestingly, a scene in the video sparked a fan theory suggesting that a renowned Marvel hero might join forces to save the day.
MCU Fans Believed Thanos Had Already Fought One of Marvel’s Biggest Heroes
Before the release of “Infinity War”, Thanos was not well-known, and his actions had mainly been hinted at rather than shown in a substantial manner. The trailers for “Infinity War” served as an initial chance for Marvel Studios to demonstrate why Thanos, the Mad Titan, was a formidable antagonist, and they delivered on this promise. In these trailers, heroes like Iron Man discovered Thanos’ presence, while he was unleashing his power for the first time. This included throwing a punch at Captain America and threatening the entire universe while wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. However, despite these menacing actions, fans were drawn away from them by the distinctive markings on Thanos’ face.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hadn’t delved into Thanos’ past, leading fans to speculate that the marks on him were from a fierce battle in which he participated. Given the appearance of what seemed like claw marks on Thanos, rumors circulated online suggesting Wolverine would debut in Infinity War. However, there was no proof to back up these claims, but given the magnitude of the film, anything could have been possible. Unfortunately, the Avengers lost, and Wolverine did not appear. It wasn’t until seven years later in Deadpool & Wolverine that he finally joined the franchise. However, it’s unlikely Wolverine will miss another significant MCU event as he is expected to be one of the leading characters for the upcoming phases.
Wolverine Will Get a Chance to Throw Down With the Rest of the MCU’s Big Bads

Although Hugh Jackman’s participation in Avengers: Doomsday hasn’t been officially announced, it’s tough to envision a situation where actors from the original X-Men team and Ryan Reynolds are involved, but he isn’t. It appears that Marvel Studios might be keeping Wolverine’s role under wraps to preserve some element of surprise for when Doomsday premieres in 2026. With the upcoming movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars, it seems unlikely that Jackman will continue for much longer, given that the X-Men are being recast in the reboot film directed by Jake Schreier for Thunderbolts. Nevertheless, Wolverine doesn’t have to vanish completely, as there are numerous possibilities for the MCU to introduce a new version of the character, be it on Disney+ or the big screen.
With the X-Men now officially part of the team, fans no longer need to guess whether a villain has been hurt by Wolverine’s adamantium claws. Instead, they can enjoy watching their beloved mutants engage in epic battles against adversaries like Doctor Doom, Magneto, and Apocalypse on the big screen. There’s also a chance that a version of the Mad Titan could make an appearance in the future, confirming his rivalry with Weapon X. The Marvel Cinematic Universe certainly has a wealth of possibilities to explore in the multiverse.
Avengers: Infinity War is streaming on Disney+.
