The Batman 2 Suffers Another Major Loss Ahead of Filming Start

Viewers were particularly captivated by the visual aspects of 2022’s ‘The Batman’, primarily because of its impressive cinematography, directed by Greig Fraser. The film offered a visually striking portrayal of Gotham City, a grimy and crime-ridden backdrop that perfectly suited the narrative of the Batman Epic Crime Saga. As production for ‘The Batman Part II’ nears, fans eagerly anticipate another immersive visual experience. However, since Matt Reeves is set to direct the sequel, it seems a new cinematographer will collaborate with him.

In an interview on the podcast “On Film… With Kevin McCarthy,” actor Josh Brolin shared that director of photography Roger Deakins won’t be returning for the filming of “Dune: Messiah” due to his busy schedule shooting four biopics about The Beatles directed by Sam Mendes. Although “The Batman Part II” wasn’t discussed in the podcast, considering the production timelines, it appears that Deakins might not have time to revisit Gotham City either, leading fans to speculate that a new cinematographer may be needed for the sequel.

The Batman Part II Might Lose Talent on Both Sides of the Camera

Previously this summer, “The Batman Part II” saw a turn for the better following several production halts. Directed by Matt Reeves alongside co-writer Mattson Tomlin, they completed the script in June, moving forward with filming set to commence in the spring. Regrettably, recent news about the movie has been less optimistic. There are rumors that Zoë Kravitz might not return for her role as Catwoman in the next installment; during a promotion event for the movie “Caught Stealing”, journalists were said to have been advised not to ask questions about “The Batman 2” since “she’s not in it and doesn’t know anything.

The absence of Kravitz in front of the camera would be quite noticeable, and the loss of Fraser would leave a significant gap. He was an ideal choice for “The Batman,” seamlessly collaborating with Reeves to bring a fresh perspective on Gotham. Fraser has also demonstrated his talent on numerous other prestigious productions, particularly in the genre category. His Oscar win for “Dune” is just one example, and he’s also worked closely with Gareth Edwards on projects such as “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “The Creator,” among others. Fraser’s filmography encompasses various genres, but he excels at portraying the grandeur and magnitude required for blockbuster films.

As an ardent film enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge the significant impact and talent of Matthew Libatique, who stepped into the shoes of the esteemed Greig Fraser on ‘The Batman Part II’. While Hollywood is brimming with exceptional cinematographers, Fraser’s work has undeniably left a lasting impression. It’s no wonder that Mendes covets his unique vision for the entire Beatles project, ensuring a cohesive and captivating visual experience across all four films. I eagerly anticipate learning who Reeves will collaborate with for the next Batman film.

One promising contender is Michael Seresin, who previously worked alongside Reeves on his Planet of the Apes films. His latest project as a director of photography was 2021’s Gunpowder Milkshake, but he shares a history with Reeves and has demonstrated expertise in portraying post-apocalyptic worlds. Seresin could bring a keen eye for detail to depicting a crime-ridden and downtrodden Gotham. However, as an 83-year-old veteran, his involvement may depend on various factors that will ultimately determine if he joins the DC universe.

It’s really disappointing if we might see more departures from the cast and team of The Batman Part II before production begins. Fingers crossed that scheduling conflicts or other problems don’t prevent anyone from returning to the project. With casting expected to begin in the fall, let’s hope for updates about new additions to the film instead!
