In the upcoming third season of the popular television series based on the game “The Last of Us,” there are some significant shifts in store, which fans are eagerly anticipating. Unlike the previous seasons, the focus will primarily be on Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. Additionally, this season will mark a departure from the creative team as Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, who have been co-creators, will not be involved.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about Craig Mazin’s latest chat with The Hollywood Reporter! He’s dished on his solo writing journey for the upcoming season of “The Last of Us,” and here’s what we can anticipate. Though this is his first time penning the series alone, he appears unfazed by the task of bringing this cherished series to life single-handedly.
When quizzed about his progress with the writing process, Mazin shared that while he’s penned some parts, there’s still a lot more writing ahead. So, fellow fans, let’s keep our fingers crossed for another gripping season of “The Last of Us!” And who knows? Maybe Craig will step behind the camera for more than just the season premiere in the next season!
This moment is particularly special for me, as it’s incredibly peaceful. I find myself immersed in my comfortable ergonomic keyboard, typing away serenely. The words flow effortlessly, and I feel like a contemplative monk lost in my work – something that brings me immense joy. This, I believe, is the most authentic expression of what I do,” he shared with the media outlet.
“However, this tranquil period will soon come to an end as we embark on an extended preparation phase, while I continue writing. Once preparations are underway, we’ll also start shooting, even as I finalize my writings. In seasons one and two, I managed to complete the scripting about six weeks before we commenced shooting the final episode.
Although he’s working alone for Season 3, Mazin mentioned that he gained a considerable amount of knowledge from Neil during the first two seasons, which has been beneficial while writing for this new season. Interestingly enough, although they worked together on previous seasons, Neil was often preoccupied with managing Naughty Dog, leaving Mazin mostly on his own during production in Canada. As a result, Mazin feels that the process isn’t much different this time around. Essentially, when they made Season 2, they were already considering what would come next because half of the story couldn’t be told without considering the bigger picture. Therefore, they had already completed most of that work by then.
The television series “The Last of Us” is inspired by the popular video game franchise of the same name, developed by Naughty Dog and Iron Galaxy. Set twenty years after a catastrophic fungal outbreak that wiped out civilization, the show centers around Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), a tough survivor who escorts Ellie (Bella Ramsey), an immune young girl, across a post-apocalyptic United States to reach the Fireflies. The critically acclaimed debut season of the HBO Max series was met with widespread praise, boasting a remarkable 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The success led to a second season renewal, although it saw a slight drop in its Rotten Tomatoes score with a 91%, and introduced Kaitlyn Dever’s character Abby to the storyline.
In simple terms, the third season is set to premiere with Sarah Dever’s character Abby taking center stage. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz due to behind-the-scenes adjustments. As of now, it’s anticipated that the series won’t resume until around 2027. The delay is due to discussions about potentially expanding the series to four seasons, aiming to fully develop the story they initially intended. The third season will adapt the game’s style by shifting focus from Ellie’s story to Abby’s, and producers want to ensure they can narrate Abby’s journey without hurrying it. To provide a comprehensive look at certain events, the series plans to flash back to Abby’s perspective.
Currently, there’s no definite timeline for the commencement of production for Season 3 of “The Last of Us”. But, enthusiasts have the opportunity to stream both seasons at present, only on HBO Max.
