In simple terms, fans are buzzing and discussing once more about “Peacemaker” Season 2 as it kicks off. This is due to the fact that showrunner James Gunn swiftly tackled a glaring continuity issue from the previous season. The finale of Season 1 saw Peacemaker (played by John Cena) and his team, the “11th Street Kids,” successfully thwarting an alien invasion known as the Butterflies, but the Justice League, comprising Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Aquaman, arrived late at the battlefield. Contrarily, when Season 2 begins, it’s a different group of superheroes, led by characters from Gunn’s “Superman” movie (Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mister Terriffic) who are seen fighting against the Butterflies. It appears Superman and Supergirl are now part of this team.
James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, has openly expressed his desire to rework the ending of Peacemaker Season 1 and alter it to feature the Justice League instead. He emphasized that delving into the differences between the DCEU’s Peacemaker and the one from the DC Universe might not hold much interest for most viewers. Consequently, it appears that the continuity of Peacemaker lies within the DC Universe.
While there’s a popular belief that Gunn wouldn’t conclude the DCEU saga with an unexpected twist, some fans speculate that Season 2 of Peacemaker could instead incorporate the concept of multiple universes and realities in a poignant farewell for the DC Extended Universe.
Peacemaker Seasons 1 & 2 Occur In Two Different Realities
In this theory, it’s proposed that the first two seasons of the TV show “Peacemaker” take place within both the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) and the DCU (DC Universe). Although their backstories share similarities, there are significant differences between the lives of Peacemaker in these universes.
- The DCEU’s premiere superhero team is the Justice League; the DCU has the Justice Gang.
- Rick Flag Sr. never became a prominent figure in the DCEU or sought revenge for the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad.
- The DCEU version of Superman was shot by a Kryptonite bullet from Peacemaker’s Task Force X teammate Bloodsport (Idris Elba); the DCU Superman didn’t go through such a near-death ordeal.
Even though James Gunn hinted that the theory could be correct during a press event with ComicBook (and other outlets), he suggested that the most straightforward approach for Peacemaker Season 2, set after Superman, would be to simply state, “This world is slightly different.” We’re aware of multiple universes, and in this one, everything remains as it was during Season 1 – except for the addition of the Justice League and Batmite.
Based on popular fan speculation, it’s suggested that the tight alignment of Peacemaker’s DC Universe continuity with the DCEU isn’t merely a way to escape complications in franchise continuity. Instead, it might be setting up an eccentric and emotionally poignant farewell to the DCEU, hinting at a surprising twist in Season 2’s concluding episodes.
DCEU Peacemaker Will Get A Happy Ending
In the finale of Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 1, the character accidentally killed a counterpart from a joyful universe where the Smith family operated as a crime-fighting team. Judging by trailers and interviews, it seems that Season 2 will delve into DCU Christopher Smith questioning whether he should trade his life for a chance in this blissful universe. The season is also expected to convey James Gunn’s DC multiverse spin on “It’s A Wonderful Life,” with the overall message being that one should cherish the life they have rather than yearning for an alternate existence.
The DC Universe’s Peacemaker will remain in his world and series, but the problem of finding a replacement for the peaceful universe remains unsolved. However, the perfect candidate might be found within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Given their shared background, it seems likely that the DCEU’s Peacemaker would thrive in the peaceful universe timeline. As a tribute to his past work in the DCEU, writer Gunn may arrange for Peacemaker (and possibly some companions) to have a well-deserved retirement in this new setting.
As a closing note, introducing a scene that wouldn’t interfere with the overall enjoyment of the show for general audiences, but would resonate strongly with fans of the DCEU. Moreover, this scene could serve as a symbolic gesture from Gunn towards his long-time critics, by having his DCU character Peacemaker effectively seal off the DCEU for good, literally closing a portal.
Peacemaker Season 2 streams on HBO Max.
