Supporters of the canceled series “Dexter: Original Sin” are attempting to capture Paramount’s notice, following the streaming service’s decision to end the beloved show. The Dexter franchise has been one of television’s most prominent for two decades, expanding its fanbase through streaming platforms and social media. This digital expansion allowed a new generation to engage with the series and spread it across various platforms. The incredible success of the Dexter universe led to numerous sequels and even a prequel titled “Dexter: Original Sin.” This spin-off delved into Dexter Morgan’s early days as a serial killer and blood spatter analyst at Miami Metro in the 90s, quickly gaining support from viewers.
In the first part of this year, there were rumors circulating in the entertainment industry that the series “Dexter: Original Sin” had been renewed for a second season. The cast members themselves shared their excitement on social media about its continuation. However, Showtime never officially confirmed it through a press release. At an Upfronts event earlier this year, Paramount presented Molly Brown and Christian Slater to represent “Dexter: Original Sin,” several months after the first season had concluded. This led many to believe that a second season was guaranteed. Regrettably, this wasn’t the truth. Instead, it was announced this past week that “Dexter: Original Sin” had been canceled, and the cast expressed their sadness about its termination on social media.
Dexter: Original Sin Fans Petition to Save the Show
Fervent supporters were dismayed by the show’s cancellation, given that Dexter: Original Sin broke Showtime viewing records and was highly successful. The continuation, Dexter: Resurrection, had even greater success, making it all the more surprising that Dexter: Original Sin wouldn’t return for a second season. This disappointment has prompted fans to create online petitions in an effort to bring back Dexter: Original Sin. One such petition on Change.org, started by fan Samuel McKay, has amassed over 6,500 signatures within merely two days.
The cancellation of “Dexter: Original Sin” is believed to have been due to Paramount combining forces with Skydance, leading to a new management team taking over. This new leadership decided to reassess the company’s projects and as a result, they opted to cancel “Original Sin”. Instead, it seems that there is now a focus on “Dexter: Resurrection” Season 2, as they prefer to continue with Michael C. Hall’s portrayal of Dexter.
It’s possible that the cancellation of additional Dexter spin-offs, including a Trinity Killer prequel series, might also be called off. However, it remains uncertain whether a petition would influence Paramount’s decision significantly. Fan movements have demonstrated their power, as shown by the Snyder Cut movement, but whether Paramount will reconsider is yet to be seen.
