2024 brought forth a fresh chapter for the “Planet of the Apes” series with the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.” Directed by Wes Ball, this fourth reboot is set 300 years after “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and portrays an alternate Earth inhabited mainly by apes, while humans survive as wild creatures. After Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) demise, a young ape named Noa (Owen Teague) encounters Nova (Freya Allan), a human scavenger. When Noa’s fellow apes are taken into slavery by the merciless Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), they unite to honor Caesar’s legacy, seeking a way to foster harmony between their species and humans. Critics generally praised “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” with an 81% approval rating from critics and 77% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being the lowest-grossing film among the reboot’s quartet with $397 million in global box office receipts, positive reviews have sparked optimism for the series’ continuation. A year after “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” hit the big screen, fans eagerly anticipate a sequel.
Information regarding the advancement of a sequel in the “Planet of the Apes” kingdom is scarce at present, yet fresh tidbits have ignited anticipation among the series’ enthusiasts about the forthcoming projects.
Is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Getting a Sequel?
20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell has officially verified that a follow-up to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is indeed in the works. When questioned by The Hollywood Reporter about their forthcoming lineup, Asbell gave insight into what lies ahead for the studio.
He mentioned that having this knowledge – like knowing when the ‘Avatar’ films will be released, being aware of ‘Predator’, and knowing there’s another ‘Apes’ movie in 2027 – allows them to strategize when planning these franchises. This foreknowledge also helps them consider what unique movies within certain genres they should explore and introduce to the market.
Despite Asbell not providing many details regarding the sequel’s progression, it’s heartening to learn that 20th Century Studios has embarked on creating a genuine continuation of the “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”. With this news, fans can eagerly anticipate more information about the sequel’s plot, characters, and release schedule.
How Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Sets Up a Sequel
In light of no official details about the sequel to the Planet of the Apes: Kingdom being disclosed yet, we can speculate on the storyline based on the film’s ending. The finale showcases several captivating events, such as the revelation that Nova (formerly known as Mae) is a member of a group of humans seeking technology from the vault to regain their power.
The climax features a fierce confrontation between Proximus and the humans, with both parties trying to open the vault. As the area floods, Proximus confronts Noa, but he manages to call his fellow Eagle Clan members for backup. This intervention results in Proximus’ presumed death after falling off a cliff. Following this event, the Eagle Clan rebuilds their home and Mae and Noa part ways.
Later on, Mae reaches a human satellite base with a hard drive that was previously thought to be a book. The activation of the base’s satellites allows humans to establish communication with other settlements.
In the finale of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” Noa leads the Eagle Clan, and it appears a human rebellion is growing stronger. As in the previous films, war between apes and humans seems imminent, but this time, the humans aim to conquer the world. The upcoming “Apes” movie may present this conflict differently, as the apes are organized in established clans while the humans are uniting against them. This reversal of roles from the previous “Apes” trilogy could create an engaging battle scenario. Furthermore, Noa and other faithful followers of Caesar’s teachings will likely face tough challenges in a highly polarized environment. Mae’s complex connection with the apes may re-emerge as she collaborates with her human associates. When the humans reveal themselves, armed with technology and advanced weaponry, chaos could ensue, leaving Noa with a significant challenge when his story continues.
Who’s in the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Sequel Cast?
Information about casting for the sequel to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is currently secret, but there’s plenty to ponder. It seems likely that both Teague’s character Noa and Allan’s character Mae will return due to the open-ended nature of the first movie’s conclusion. As for Durand’s character Proximus, it remains uncertain whether he truly perished, which could set the stage for either a surprising resurrection or the introduction of a new antagonist ape. Unfortunately, we might not see William H. Macy’s character Trevathan in the next film since he met his end in the previous installment.
In the movie titled “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, it’s unclear whether the character Raka, played by Peter Macon, will reappear because he was carried away by water following his heroic act of saving Mae. Yet, there’s always a possibility that we might see him again in the next installment. Characters like Lydia Peckham’s Soona, Travis Jeffery’s Anaya, Sara Wiseman’s Dar, and Dichen Lachman’s Korina may also make a comeback in the sequel. Until any official casting decisions are made, it’s hard to say for sure who will return. However, if the “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” sequel picks up where the current story left off, we can expect many familiar faces to reappear.
When Will the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Sequel Release in Theaters?
The release date for the next installment in the “Planet of the Apes” series, titled “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” is currently undisclosed as filming has not yet begun. If production starts within the next year or so, Asbell’s prediction of a 2027 release might be accurate. However, potential setbacks such as delays in shooting and an extended post-production process could lead to the movie being released in 2028 or even later. Given the franchise’s history, it seems plausible that we can expect this new series of “Apes” movies to follow a similar release schedule as before. Notably, seven years elapsed between the last “Apes” film and “Kingdom,” while just three years separated each of “Rise,” “Dawn,” and “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Consequently, it’s reasonable to assume this new series will maintain a similar production timeline.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
