The competitive spirit remains vibrant within the gaming world of “League of Legends,” having been a mainstay for 16 years in its competitive scene and now commencing its second season under the revised ranked format. If you’re finding it challenging to keep up with your ranked matches or are seeking a change, selecting a Top Lane Tank could be an effective strategy to boost your win count. Choosing the right tank for this role can sometimes be puzzling, though, particularly when attempting to sidestep champions that lack strength in the current game meta.
This list is similarly interpretable as “The Most Challenging Tank Champions in the Top Lane for League of Legends.” Although adjustments such as nerfs or buffs significantly impact a champion’s rank on the ladder, the complex nature of these specific tank champions seems to be the primary reason they are considered lower-tier in the Top Lane. Despite their potential for dominance, mastering these champions requires considerable time and dedication.
The list you see showcases the hardest tank champions to play effectively in the top lane of League of Legends. Even though changes like buffs or nerfs can affect a champion’s rank, it’s their high difficulty level that keeps these champions from being top-tier choices. However, with practice and patience, you can still excel with them.
1) K’sante
As a fellow gamer diving into the realm of tank champions, I’ve found that K’Sante stands out visually among his peers, but earning mastery over him isn’t just a walk in the park – he’s quite the challenge to grasp. To top it off, K’Sante currently seems to be battling an uphill struggle when it comes to selection rates and victories compared to other tanks, making him a less common choice among players.
Although K’sante initially enjoyed high popularity upon release, his slow and cumbersome ability set has hindered him from competing with other Top Lane tanks. This was particularly noticeable following several updates and a substantial redesign that altered his abilities’ focus. His ultimate, which temporarily discards all defenses for damage and lifesteal based on missing health instead of a cap, is one of the more challenging ults to master in the game. For many players, this ultimate offers more risk than reward due to its complexity.
2) Poppy
It’s tough to acknowledge, but it seems my go-to pick for Top Lane Tanks in the game might not be the optimal choice for many players.
This version maintains the original meaning while making it more natural and easier to read by using “might not” instead of “simply may not,” which can come off as too formal, and changing “one of my favorite champions” to “my go-to pick.” This helps to clarify that the speaker has a personal preference for this champion.
While her Q, which inflicts significant damage twice and leaves a ground mark that slows enemies, along with her ability to gain extra armor and magic resistance (doubled when her health is low), might seem enticing. However, her skills require advanced mastery, making her less competitive against some top-tier tank champions in the game. Her crowd control abilities often depend on creating a wall or the enemy having a dash (less common in top lane than expected). Her ultimate, although excellent for disengaging from a fight, lacks heavy killing power and the boosting capabilities other tanks have to secure victories. Instead, it caters to more specific, niche scenarios compared to the average top laner’s ultimate.
3) Gragas
As a dedicated fan, I can’t quite label Gragas as an unadulterated “tank,” but he undeniably embodies the tank spirit due to his renowned tank builds. In the realm of Top Lane champions, Gragas boasts the steepest skill curve, making him challenging to master. Without a profound grasp of his character, I’ve found myself vulnerable to being outmaneuvered, taking unnecessary damage from pokes, and even falling victim in every skirmish I initiate.
An exceptionally skilled Gragas is truly impressive and ought not to be underestimated. Although this champion may seem less versatile beyond the lane, a skilled Gragas player within the lane can relentlessly harass you and ultimately hurl you beneath his own turret for an unfortunate conclusion.
Or more casually:
Don’t write off a top-notch Gragas player! They might not seem all that useful outside of the lane, but in it, they can pester you with relentless attacks and toss you under their own tower for a brutal end!
In my view, some tanks for the Top Lane in League of Legends are particularly challenging to excel with, due to their complexity and the current game balance. The kits of these champions have been weakened or there’s an increased prevalence of champions that counter them, leading to lower win and pick rates for these champions. However, it’s essential to note that these champions aren’t entirely useless; a skilled player can still progress using any of them.
