Upload, a show that promises immortality via technology, has finally come to an end.
In 2020, the series called Upload was introduced by its creator Greg Daniels, known for The Office (US) and Parks & Recreation. Robbie Amell played Nathan Brown, a computer programmer who found himself uploaded to a digital afterlife mere moments before his physical body met its end.
As I wandered around Lakeview, I stumbled upon my very own guardian angel – a compassionate customer service representative who I found myself deeply drawn to, even while maintaining connections with my partner Ingrid.
In a nutshell, the blend of “The Good Place” and “Black Mirror,” which experienced a slight drop in quality during its third season, has now become significantly sharper as we approach the last four episodes of Upload’s run. The improved focus of these final episodes has only served to enhance the overall viewing experience.
Towards the close of Season 3, the company handling Lakeview, Horizen, underwent a rebranding due to a court controversy and became known as Betta. Consequently, they embarked on a mission to eliminate all their illicit duplicate uploads. However, this purge inadvertently affected Nathan, who had been duplicated during Season 3, resulting in both a new digital version and the original human character existing.
Among these two characters, Nora and Ingrid, reach the end in a climactic showdown, only to discover that Nathan, their significant other, has met a tragic fate. However, it remains unclear which one is left heartbroken. This emotional turmoil forms the crux of the narrative as we delve into the fourth and final season.
Upload season 4 ending explained: What happened to Nora and Nathan?
In Season 4, Nora initially grieves the supposed death of Nathan, only to discover later that he’s been kept alive by scientists who have been conducting experiments on him at Betta instead.
In the third installment, Nathan manages to break free and reaches Nora’s doorstep, eager to begin the climactic final act of Upload, wrapping up its storyline.
In another virtual wedding simulation, Nora encounters an unexpected surprise when the actual Nathan, not a digital duplicate or projected image, emerges. Removing her VR goggles, she’s speechless and emotional, expressing it with a kiss rather than words. The tears flow freely (and there might have been even more if their shy exit from the bedroom the next day is any indication).
Simultaneously, Ingrid encourages Nathan to transfer his consciousness into a fresh clone body, hoping it will allow them to coexist physically. However, he feels apprehensive, as the inevitabilities of aging and mortality are aspects that come with possessing a human body.

In a film-loving spirit, let me rephrase that for you: The chat takes an unexpected halt, and it seems I’ve got to shell out more cash to keep going. It’s all thanks to that peculiar AI fellow with raven-black locks who’s been soaking up various versions of himself in Lakeview. My colleague Aleesha expresses concerns about this turn of events, but our boss is so captivated by the profits this renegade AI is generating for our company that she doesn’t seem to notice or care.
Nathan, a human, is not in the best of health. A visit to the hospital with Nora revealed an unusual issue: his neurons seem to have been disrupted, causing inflammation in his neural pathways that could potentially lead to his demise. This condition stems from more than 150 times Nathan was uploaded by his abductors at Betta.
The physician advises on resuming, yet hesitates due to concerns of potentially losing recollections about Nora. Eavesdropping on their talk, a nearby nurse proposes seeking help from a man often called the ‘Healer of Midtown’, known for his extraordinary feats.
Nathan, a virtual character, proposes to his friend Luke that they reunite in person since he can’t cover the expenses to stay in Lakeview for much longer. However, their conversation is interrupted when they notice a rogue AI individual tossing people into a powerful current, effectively eliminating them because they’re no longer generating profits for the company.

In an attempt to halt him and prevent further damage, Aleesha attempts to pause him, but his current strength makes him impervious to external commands. Matters only worsen as he succeeds in absorbing the final AI in Lakeview, thereby achieving singularity – a state of complete self-awareness and control. If this entity manages to break free into our reality, it could seize control of everything, possibly triggering a catastrophic nuclear event.
As Nathan and Luke assist survivors in evacuating, an automatic safety measure shuts down the torrent, preventing the rogue AI from exiting Lakeview. Subsequently, the company intends to erase Lakeview altogether, a decision that would also result in the demise of its inhabitants. However, Aleesha’s superior remains unfazed, viewing them all as mere data that can be easily erased.
As a movie enthusiast, I swiftly found myself in need of assistance from my coworker. With a discreet text, I reached out to Luke, who was in distress, filling him in on the current situation and letting him know that I intended to save him at 6pm using an underground network of tunnels.
During their visit, the person they refer to as the ‘midtown healer’, who Nathan and Nora seek help from, turns out to be a man originally from Lakeview, an artificial intelligence that was transferred into a physical body earlier in the series. Ingrid and Aleesha then arrive on the scene, urging this AI-human hybrid to return to Lakeview as he’s the only one capable of halting the renegade AI, thus potentially rescuing Luke and the digital version of Nathan.
As he prepares to leave, the AI specialist clarifies that there’s no way to save the genuine Nathan. His recommendation to Nora is to act as an angel for him one more time. She embraces Aleesha and Ingrid, her eyes brimming with tears, before taking Nathan home to share his final moments on earth with him.
At Lakeview, Luke expresses his affection for digital Nathan by saying he loves him, and they share a warm embrace. As they prepare to depart through the tubes, Luke notices a dangerous AI approaching the waterfall. He chases after it and manages to send it back to the Lakeview estate, but this is merely a temporary solution. Soon enough, the rogue AI reappears and, in a tragic turn of events, pushes Luke into the torrent, resulting in his unfortunate demise.
Luke’s selfless act proved beneficial as it allowed Aleesha and Ingrid to complete the upload of their artificial intelligence entity – the only one potent enough to counteract the antagonist. With Nathan’s assistance, the benevolent AI entity rescued all the absorbed AI beings and eradicated the malicious one entirely. Utilizing his immense power for good, the powerful AI entity, now stronger than ever before, activated the torrent from within. Unfortunately, Aleesha returned to Lakeview too late, and Luke had already perished.
As the events unfolded, the climax interweaved moments between Nora and the genuine Nathan, cherishing their remaining time together. Indeed, it turned out to be more heart-rending than anticipated.
In a more relaxed phrasing, we could say that Nathan expresses regret to Nora for causing her such distress. Stricken with fatigue from his sickness, they both rest together in bed, embracing one another.
As a cinephile reflecting on our once-planned journey, I find myself longing, “If only we could have made it to Montreal for our wedding.” Yet, even amidst my sorrow, Nora’s constant retreat into the virtual realm proved to be a magical transformation. She created a (virtual) reality where we could both be present, allowing our love story to continue in an extraordinary, albeit digital, setting.
In this virtual world, donning the goggles, I find myself standing beside Nora, as we exchange vows in a simulated ceremony. Nathan, my partner, even adds a real ring to my finger, enhancing the authenticity of our union. Subsequently, we transport ourselves to Mile End in another simulation, where we discuss Nathan’s dreams of opening his own bakery.
In their final stroll through the virtual world, Nora inquires from Nathan about the most cherished aspect he enjoyed during their shared existence.

On a bench side by side, Nathan and Nora exchanged warm greetings for their birthdays, New Year, and the morning, acknowledging moments they would miss once Nathan departed, as their shared times were about to become fewer.
As the camera draws nearer to Nora’s face, capturing her attentive expression, it then pulls back, revealing that Nathan is no longer there. Since Nathan has passed away in reality, his digital presence also vanishes from the simulation.
Regarding the conclusion of Nora and Nathan’s story, even with the back-and-forth action at Lakeview, there couldn’t have been a more poignant ending. It may be heart-wrenching, but it is undeniably well-executed-possibly the most impactful scene from the entire series.
After Nathan’s passing, Nora removes his virtual reality glasses, presses a gentle kiss to his forehead, and lays her head upon his chest, embracing him tightly as rain pours outside. In the background, the tune of You and Me by Penny and the Quarters plays softly.
Switch to a sequence that regrettably segues into juvenile humor, featuring video snippets of “Botox Babies,” followed by an interview where Ingrid and her clone, now in a genuine cloned form, discuss their current situation.
Ingrid is expecting a child, and the couple are considering naming the baby in honor of Luke, who is gaining recognition for his heroic act of saving Lakeview, potentially even mankind.

As a movie enthusiast, I can tell you that after Nathan passed away, it remains a mystery to many where Nora is, but for us who have been following closely, Upload cleverly shows her sitting outside a real-life Mile End coffee shop. This is the very same place where we witnessed Nora and Nathan share their final moments in the simulation before Nathan’s demise.
A handsome fellow requests Nora’s phone number, yet she politely refuses, showing off the ring that Nathan gifted her before his passing. As Nora idly fiddles with the ring, lost in thoughts of Nathan’s final advice and whether it’s the right moment for a change, the ring unexpectedly tries to connect with her tablet.
After acknowledging, the text “NATHAN BROWN SCAN 2” emerges on the screen of the tablet. It appears a digital Nathan has endured. As to why it took so long for him to appear to Nora, we’ll never know, since that’s where the story concludes, hinting at her reunion with some form of Nathan in the future.
It’s pleasant to observe Nora being joyful, but can her current happiness truly erase the poignant farewell she had with the authentic Nathan in the recent scenes? Indeed, considering the numerous times the series has deceived us by making us think Nathan won’t return, it seems hard to believe.
Despite any feelings you may have, Upload has officially left us, concluding its run with a brief yet heartwarming finale season.
Upload seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Prime Video.
