For approximately a month now, Nintendo has hosted numerous livestream events other than the regular Nintendo Direct. These include Partner Showcases, Indie World broadcasts, and even a specific presentation focused on Kirby Air Riders. Despite this, Nintendo has remained silent about any potential general Direct event, which is what fans have been eagerly anticipating. Lately, speculation has been growing that we might witness a general Nintendo Direct in September, and it appears that this theory is becoming more credible.
Usually, Nintendo Directs take place in September, but due to the launch of Nintendo Switch 2 in June, this year’s schedule has been disrupted. A leaker known as Switch Force suggested earlier this month that a Nintendo Direct would still occur in September, and now sources for Video Games Chronicle are confirming this claim, saying it will happen around mid-September. Switch Force also hinted at a potential date of September 12th for the live stream. While it’s unusual for a Nintendo Direct to take place on a Friday, given the events of this year so far, anything is possible.
Why a Nintendo Direct Has to Happen Soon
Though we can’t confirm the exact date of September 12th, it’s almost guaranteed that a Nintendo Direct event will take place within the upcoming weeks. Even after hosting three livestreams in the past month, there remain numerous unanswered questions about what the rest of this year and early 2026 will bring. The most significant uncertainty at present concerns Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which is expected to hit stores before the year ends but lacks a specific release date. With Pokemon Legends: Z-A set for October and Kirby Air Riders scheduled for November, it appears increasingly likely that we’ll see Metroid Prime 4 come out in December, perfectly timed for the holiday rush. An announcement in September would provide Nintendo ample time to generate excitement for the game leading up to its release.
Regarding the highly-anticipated games, we’re still in the dark about when exactly “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment” will arrive. Developed by Koei Tecmo, it was showcased in a recent Indie World presentation, but unfortunately, a specific release date hasn’t been revealed yet, even though it’s rumored to drop in 2025.
Adding to the suspense, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the original “Super Mario Bros”, and Nintendo has remained silent on any plans for celebration. Furthermore, there’s no word on a sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” that is set to premiere on April 3, 2026.
As September draws near, anticipation is high that an announcement will be made shortly by Nintendo. With a plethora of exciting developments on the horizon over the next eight months or so, and not forgetting some previously announced Switch 1 games slated for release in 2026 such as “Rhythm Heaven Groove” and “Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream”, it’s evident that Nintendo needs to ramp up excitement among fans. With many still debating whether to upgrade to a Switch 2 this coming holiday season, it’s crucial for Nintendo to create a buzz and entice players.
