Superman’s Worst Future is Coming to Ruin Him

Superman finds himself in a difficult situation. Lois Lane has exhausted her Kryptonian abilities, Lex Luthor is his adversary once more, Pharm and Graft are causing trouble, and he’s still a volcano in a cape, infected by Red Kryptonite. Sadly, things will only get tougher for Superman. He must convince the nocturnal superhero of Metropolis, Marilyn Moonlight, that he poses no threat to their city. However, there’s something far more ominous looming in his future. They won’t be waiting around for long; Darkseid’s twisted Legion of Super-Heroes is on its way to meet the hero who once inspired them. They bring with them pain, suffering, and despair that characterize their new world.

Superman Versus Everyone

In issue #27 of Superman, an anger-fueled Superman, poisoned by Red-K, forcefully breaks into Stryker’s prison to locate Lex Luthor. Yet, he encounters Marilyn Moonlight who believes him to be insane. Despite his rage coursing through him like a runaway train, Superman adheres to his moral compass. He restrains himself and persuades Marilyn not to engage in combat, hinting that Lex, Pharm, and Graft are missing, suggesting that Lex may have control over when and where Marilyn can manifest. The duo then sets out to track the villains, and with their rampage through downtown in a colossal SuperCorp robot, the members of the Lex Luthor Revenge Squad are easily found, demanding that Lex confront them.

In the midst of their battle, Lex speaks out, aware that Superman can hear him. He confides that his actions – letting the villains go, exposing Superman to Red Kryptonite, and sending Marilyn Moonlight against him – were all part of a plan to escape Metropolis. Although he appreciated working with Superman, upon regaining his memories, he felt compelled to depart in order to discover who the new Lex Luthor is. He discloses that Marilyn’s abilities can cure Superman’s condition and that the robot can only be destroyed by hitting it with the SuperCorp logo. Superman performs this action, both symbolically and literally cutting ties with the company, and Lex takes his leave. In the aftermath, Marilyn Moonlight is released from her nighttime curse, Mercy now heads the renamed LexCorp, Lex disappears to an unknown location using sign language to avoid detection by Superman, and Superman, though feeling he’s returned to a familiar state, underestimates the future’s complexity.

Darkseid’s Legion is Coming

In a distant era, the Time Trapper gets imprisoned by Darkseid’s troops, who then transport him to the location of another captive, Booster Gold. They inform him that Booster plays a crucial role in their schemes, as his travel through the rift left behind by Darkseid’s demise in the Watchtower has made him a reservoir of Omega Energy. The Time Trapper reminds his captors that he is still powerful enough to be called Doomsday and manages to break free from his restraints to escape, seeking out the World Forger. The final scene of Justice League Unlimited #8 shows him successfully locating the World Forger, and both entities come to a shared realization: time itself is unraveling, and their universe is facing an end due to Omega Energy.

While letting the Time Trapper escape unchallenged, the Legion chooses instead to make themselves known to Superman. In the original timeline, Superman was the inspiration behind the Legion of Super-Heroes, who serve as protectors of a heroic utopia in the 31st century – symbolizing the brighter future that Superman is striving for. However, this new version of the Legion embodies a dark twist on reality, shifting from hope to hatred. They were once Superman’s greatest allies, but now they aim to bring an end to the man who should have inspired their creation and destroy everything Superman represents along with him.
