Gege Akutami’s “Jujutsu Kaisen” is among the most popular dark fantasy Shonen series in today’s era, with its popularity continuing to soar. This manga initially appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump back in 2018, and MAPPA took it to the small screen with their anime adaptation in 2020. The anime contributed greatly to the series’ popularity surge, and since then, “Jujutsu Kaisen” has left a lasting impression on the modern Shonen audience. Although the manga concluded last year, the anime is yet to adapt its final two arcs. Announced in December 2023, “Jujutsu Kaisen” Season 3 will delve into the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident and animate the Culling Game Arc, showcasing the events that transpired post-tragedy.
The Culling Game is a high-stakes battle royale masterminded by Kenjaku as part of his grand scheme. This arc brings in numerous powerful characters, each vying for top scores while also trying to survive and escape the chaos. The second season of the anime ends with a significant cliffhanger following Yuta Okkotsu’s entry, who is expected to have a significant impact on the Culling Game. As the fights progress, we discover more about the youngest special grade sorcerer, who gained fame after the prequel movie. However, the manga delivers one of its most memorable moments, only for it to turn out disappointing. I don’t believe even the ending was able to offset the disappointment that unfolded in Chapter 179.
Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga!
The Three-Way Domain Clash Could’ve Been One of the Most Iconic Jujutsu Kaisen Moments
Ryu Ishigori and Takako Uro made their debut in the Culling Game and played minor antagonistic roles in the series, Jujutsu Kaisen. A pivotal three-way fight between these characters and Yuta Okkotsu unfolded within the Sendai Colony following the removal of Kurourushi from the Culling Game by a high-ranking sorcerer. This battle tested Yuta significantly as he faced two formidable adversaries simultaneously. In Chapter 178, the game-changing moment arrived when all three sorcerers activated their domains concurrently. Ryu and Uro sought to exclude Rika from their domain to prevent Yuta from seizing control of the situation.
Chapter 178 concluded with an awe-inspiring two-page spread, sparking curiosity about the forthcoming events. Given the intense Domain clash between Satoru Gojo and Jogo as a precedent, Yuta seemed most likely to take control in this three-way confrontation. Additionally, prior to this scene, we had never been privy to any of these three characters’ Domain Expansions within the manga. In the prequel film, Yuta hadn’t demonstrated such complex techniques either, making the prospect of witnessing it soon all the more thrilling. Unfortunately, some Jujutsu Kaisen fans may have been disappointed by how the situation was portrayed in the end.
Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 178 Built Massive Hype, But It Led to Nothing
Despite the intense anticipation generated, it turned out to be anticlimactic because the obstacles crumbled instead of intensifying due to the intricacy of the method. This event remains a conspicuous letdown in hindsight, given how much hype was built up beforehand. You might have recognized Gege Akutami’s penchant for concluding most chapters with suspenseful endings, designed to stir excitement for the series. It’s one of the reasons why Jujutsu Kaisen is captivating, as these suspenseful moments are typical in battle Shonen manga. However, not every cliffhanger necessarily leads somewhere, and that’s understandable.
Despite being an exception, the three-way battle stood out notably, as it was unprecedented in the entire series. The struggle among the three persisted post the significant mishap. Ultimately, Yuta emerged victorious, as anticipated. Moreover, Domain Expansion, undeniably the most impressive technique in Jujutsu Kaisen, never fails to captivate us with its portrayal of each character’s unique power. However, despite momentarily overlooking the initial letdown, it remains unchanged that the Domains of Uro and Ryu were left unexplored.
Apart from mentioning, it was more than two years before we got to witness Yuta’s Domain Expansion during the final arc. Notably, Ryu and Uro’s domains were never shown, and Ryu’s death seemed anticlimactic, serving primarily as a build-up for Sukuna, who had just taken over Megumi’s body. On the contrary, Uro was absent from the story following their fight. We saw her only briefly in Chapter 216 before she vanished without a trace, leaving us with no idea about her current status. It seems that due to the numerous events happening quickly, Akutami may not have had enough time to delve into the minor characters’ stories fully.
