EastEnders icon Natalie Cassidy reveals how leaving soap was a “natural decision” – and why weight loss DVDs were not “a good move”

What does the scenery look like from your couch?”

“From which vantage point does your couch offer its view? One sofa faces the television, while the other overlooks beautiful fields. Coming from a town upbringing in Islington, north London, I opted for a change of pace to country life. For my two daughters, this transition has been significantly beneficial.

What’s appealing to you about residing in rural areas?

We often take pleasant strolls. With the presence of the local tavern and community center, it feels like a scene straight from The Vicar of Dibley. Additionally, there’s a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual care among residents, which can sometimes be lacking in urban environments.

What kind of programs have you found particularly enjoyable lately? Well, with family visiting, we turned our house into a mini Glastonbury festival. I’ve been appreciating some relaxing shows like Gardeners’ World, University Challenge, and Grand Designs. As I grow older, I find myself drawn to more peaceful TV programming.

If you’re fond of Gardeners’ World, could that indicate you appreciate gardening?

It seems that you view food not merely as sustenance, but as a source of delight and bonding – much more so than some others do. Food, both cooking and sharing it with loved ones, brings immense satisfaction to you, serving as the essence of familial connections and friendships for you.

Given that you produced diet DVDs in 2007 and 2013, do you find it challenging to reconcile your love for food with the public scrutiny women often face regarding their bodies?”

“Honestly, producing those DVDs wasn’t really about my passion for fitness. I did it primarily for financial reasons. As for me now, at 42, I could use a bit more exercise, but I find myself lacking motivation. I’ve come to accept that this is the size I am supposed to be and strive to be content with it. I don’t indulge excessively in food, but I do enjoy it. A glass of wine or a packet of crisps here and there is fine, but not every day. I believe moderation is key. If I try to lose a significant amount of weight, my days aren’t as enjoyable.

As a movie enthusiast, I truly believe that’s wise advice to pass on to the younger generation. With all the unrealistic expectations and pressure surrounding looks, I make it a point to remind them, “Just imagine, you can see, you can hear! Many can’t. So, as long as you’re treating your body with respect – not overindulging in harmful habits like excessive drinking or eating – just remember, we’re all incredibly fortunate to be here, no matter our shape.

Was it a natural choice for me to depart from EastEnders after 32 years of portraying Sonia? Not really, as sometimes we get so engrossed in our roles that we forget there’s more out there. After taking a break from EastEnders last year and working on The Masked Singer and Channel 4’s What’s the Big Deal: Britain’s Best Buys?, I felt it was time to bid farewell to Sonia and explore new opportunities.

“What lies beyond us?”
My podcast, titled “Life with Nat,” has been thriving, and I have an upcoming book, “Happy Days,” set for release in October. I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of a challenging or humorous character role, but after portraying Sonia for so long, I’m truly cherishing the opportunity to be myself.
