Food Network celebrity Anne Burrell graciously invited hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager into her home over a year before her passing, giving them a glimpse of her vibrant world.
Burrell died in her home on June 18 at age 55. A cause of death has not been revealed.
In June 2024, a segment from a morning show I was following was re-shared, featuring me giving a tour of my recently remodeled Brooklyn apartment. From the refurbished kitchen and living room to my creatively designed outdoor terrace, every corner was shown. Interestingly, the photos displayed what the place looked like prior to my move-in – a humble abode with outdated appliances and no hint that the cohost of Worst Cooks in America would soon call it home.
She mentioned in the video that the place had plenty of good fundamentals, but it was clearly in need of some tender care and a refreshing makeover. My aim is to create a space filled with vibrant hues and exuding happiness, where people would walk in and feel instantly at ease.
The heart of the apartment undeniably lay in its spacious, modernized, and vibrantly colored kitchen. She had cleverly added extra countertops and cabinets to it, along with upgraded appliances. Moreover, she subtly incorporated a charming detail: cabinet handles that her husband likened to garlic bulbs.
Later on, Burrell led the audience on a tour of her kitchen adorned with various trinkets, such as multiple figurines of chickens and roosters.
She mentioned, “Trinkets bring me happiness,” she said. “I understand minimalism appeals to certain individuals, but I lean more towards maximalism.

Always acting as the gracious hostess, Burrell mentioned that she typically begins her guests’ visit by preparing their first drink. Moreover, she prepared lunch for Kotb (60) and Bush Hager (43), sampling it herself before concluding the meal. Burrell served a refreshing summer crostini with ricotta cheese, prosciutto, a touch of pesto, sliced nectarine, and an arugula salad on the side.
Approximately a year after, Burrell was discovered unconscious at his Brooklyn residence, and he was sadly confirmed deceased on the spot.
The family of Anne shared a statement with Us Weekly that read: “Anne was cherished as a wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend; wherever she went, her smile made every place brighter.” Her influence extended far beyond those who knew her personally, impacting millions worldwide. Although she is gone, the warmth of her heart, her vibrant spirit, and her endless love continue to endure eternally.
Burrell is mourned by her spouse, Stuart Claxton (married in 2021), and her stepson, Javier.
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of celebrated chef, Anne Burrell, early today. Anne was an exceptional individual and a culinary virtuoso, known for her teaching, competing, and advocating for the significance of food in our lives. The pleasure and joy that a well-prepared meal can bring was always at the heart of her work. Our sympathies go out to Anne’s loved ones, friends, and admirers as they grapple with this profound loss.
