In the process of rebuilding the DC Universe, the co-chairs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are tasked with recasting many – if not all – major DC characters moving forward. David Corenswet has proven his skills as Superman and played a significant role in the film’s success by almost perfectly embodying the legendary superhero in the movie written and directed by Gunn. Now, attention shifts from the Man of Steel to the Dark Knight. Robert Pattinson is currently cast in Matt Reeves’ Batman films, where he delivers an outstanding performance as the main character. However, it seems that the DC Universe might replace the role for The Brave and The Bold, and one name being tossed around for the part is none other than Brandon Sklenar.
Sklenar, who made his debut in Hollywood with a credited role in the 2011 film “Cornered,” has had a steadily rising acting career since then. In the early years, he landed mostly minor roles, such as the part of Loner on an episode of “New Girl” and appearances in films like “Temple,” “Mapplethorpe,” “Magic Lantern,” “Glass Jaw,” and “Vice.” More recently, Sklenar has been cast in prominent roles in productions such as “Westworld,” “Walker: Independence,” the controversial “It Ends with Us,” and most recently, the spinoff series of “Yellowstone,” titled “1923,” where he plays Spencer Dutton. In addition, Sklenar can be seen in the recent thriller film “Drop.” Furthermore, the actor has wrapped production on an adaptation of the best-selling novel “The Housemaid” and is set to feature in multiple upcoming projects, including “F.A.S.T,” “After Shock,” and “The Rescue.
So, what about possibly starring as Batman?
Sklenar Should Take on the Caped Crusader
Many aspiring actors strive to embody the legendary character of Batman, a role that resonates deeply for those who watched him on the silver screen during their childhood while also immersing themselves in the comics. Few characters have managed to sustain such enduring popularity across decades, with some actors who were born years ago still harboring dreams of donning the cape and cowl one day. This timeless appeal might explain why speculation about potential Batmen arises each time a new version is under consideration. Currently, Robert Pattinson is set to reprise his role in The Batman Part II, yet the DC Universe is also exploring The Brave and the Bold under the direction of Andy Muschietti.
Ever since the new Batman for the DC universe was initially announced in June 2023, fans have been eagerly speculating about who will assume the role. The project is currently underway, but it’s still some time away as Warner Bros. prioritizes “The Batman Part II” and maintains a suitable gap between the two films. Nevertheless, whispers persist, and Sklenar has recently become a hot topic for speculation. While he might not have as extensive a resume as other candidates, Sklenar would be an intriguing pick if cast. He’s demonstrated his adaptability in projects like “Drop” and his work on the “Yellowstone” spinoff, “1923.” Despite often being portrayed as brooding and somber, Batman has a rich inner life, and much like Pattinson, Sklenar possesses the talent to bring him to life on the silver screen.
Despite initial skepticism, the actor seems ideally suited to collaborate with director Muschietti, who is renowned for his unconventional casting decisions. For instance, when Bill Skarsgård was picked to embody Pennywise in the IT movies, there was significant pushback, with some doubting his physical fit for the legendary horror role. However, Skarsgård and Muschietti swiftly silenced the critics, resulting in an innovative portrayal of the character – one that Skarsgård will reprise in the forthcoming television series: IT: Welcome to Derry. Similarly, Sklenar might not be the first name that comes to mind when discussing Batman, but this is primarily due to underestimating his talent. Despite being relatively new in Hollywood, he has demonstrated his ability to handle any challenges that come his way.
In “The Brave and the Bold,” having the right actor to portray Batman becomes crucial since he’ll not only star in the film but also introduce new characters to the DC Universe, such as Robin. This role carries significant weight both within the movie and the DC Universe’s broader narrative. Although Sklenar might appear to be an underdog for this part, his past performances showcasing gritty yet heartfelt characters make him a strong contender for the intricate character of Batman.
Currently, there’s no announced release date for “The Brave and the Bold”. Furthermore, details about when the project might start filming are still unclear.
