In an unexpected turn of events, Amazon’s Prime Video has joined forces with musicians Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton to revamp a cherished old tale. The series will be overseen by Gina Matthews, offering a modern, music-focused adaptation of a well-known story that many are already acquainted with. This project isn’t the first attempt at reimagining the story, given its 86-year history since the original movie’s premiere, but it comes at a time when another contemporary take on the classic source material, “Wicked,” is thriving in cinemas.
On Tuesday, Deadline announced that Shania Twain and Blake Shelton are partnering with Amazon Prime Video to create a contemporary reimagining of “The Wizard of Oz” entitled “Dorothy”. This series will utilize the famous Yellow Brick Road as a symbolic representation of the hurdles and decisions faced by today’s young adults. In a statement, the showrunner, Matthews, expressed her lifelong affection for “The Wizard of Oz” books and the positive message she aims to convey through Dorothy. She stated, “I have cherished ‘The Wizard of Oz’ books since I was a child. The story serves as a reminder of the qualities we need during tough times, and Dorothy is a powerful symbol of resilience who demonstrates that with some compassion – along with determination – we can accomplish remarkable feats and uplift those around us. I am thrilled to share this empowering message with the world, especially now.
