For over a decade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ruled unchallenged at the box office, transforming lesser-known characters into household names and churning out blockbusters that grossed billions. However, this unbeatable streak was broken in 2021 with the release of Eternals, which became the first MCU film to receive a “Rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling a divisive reception. Looking back, this controversial response to the cosmic epic was not an exception but a harbinger of the broader problems facing the Multiverse Saga. In the subsequent years, Marvel Studios has grappled with a string of critical and financial setbacks as they strive to recapture the widespread praise and financial supremacy achieved during the Infinity Saga. According to Eternals director Chloé Zhao, she may have identified one reason for her film’s failure, and it could potentially shed light on the franchise’s recent struggles.
Zhao explained to Vanity Fair during her film promotion that “The Eternals” helped her transition from films set in the real world to “Hamnet”. She went on to say, “I hadn’t worked on movies with such vast resources before. With ‘Eternals’, we had an endless budget, while for ‘Hamnet’, we could only afford a single street corner as a stand-in for Stratford. The lack of limitations in ‘Eternals’ can be misleading because, with just that one street corner, every detail becomes significant.
Artists with budget constraints often find themselves coming up with innovative and precise narratives to share their tales, a characteristic frequently observed in the horror genre, which has a strong reputation for creating iconic films on minimal funds. Yet, for Marvel Studios, the matter of financing is complex. Excessive creative freedom may result in scattered storytelling, but it also brings about substantial financial stress. High production costs imply that even a revenue haul that would be considered a significant win for other studios can still fall short financially for the MCU.
For example, the highly praised movie “Thunderbolts” struggled at the box office, earning only $382 million worldwide compared to its estimated production cost of $180 million plus marketing expenses. Even “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” fared better but is yet to reach the breakeven point with a global revenue of around $492 million. These numbers hint at Marvel needing to adopt lower budgets and more creative, resourceful filmmaking approaches.
Marvel Studios Is Betting on the Avengers to Regain the Audience
Despite some difficulties faced by individual Marvel movies, the studio is banking on its most successful franchise, the Avengers, to entice audiences back to cinemas in a big way. They are planning an epic two-part production titled Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for release in December 2026 and December 2027. The first part, Doomsday, promises a star-studded cast, bringing together the Avengers with teams such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to battle the famous villain Doctor Doom (portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.).
In this rephrased version, let’s focus on simplifying complex sentences while maintaining clarity:
The iconic superhero Spider-Man, regarded as the studio’s greatest asset, is gearing up for a significant team-up event. The upcoming solo film featuring Spider-Man, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will feature Tom Holland’s Peter Parker teaming up with the Punisher, portrayed by Jon Bernthal. Their unconventional alliance is rumored to be formed in order to confront a more ruthless and aggressive version of Hulk, played by Mark Rufallo. This urban tale brimming with powerful characters suggests that the studio is going all out to deliver thrilling events that fans won’t want to miss.
As a devoted Marvel fan, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming movie, “Avengers: Secret Wars“, is anticipated to act as a fresh start for our beloved cinematic universe. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, this film focuses on “beginnings” and will bring a sense of renewal to the MCU, making it easier for us to follow the storyline and pave the way for exciting new directions ahead. Not only does it promise an integration of the X-Men characters, but there might be some changes in iconic roles like Captain America and Iron Man. This could set the stage for a whole new chapter in Marvel’s epic saga, providing us fans with countless hours of captivating entertainment!
