The charming crime comedy-drama “Death Valley” is set to make a comeback for its second season on both BBC One and iPlayer. Production for the upcoming episodes will begin this week!
In this show, the renowned actor Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth, known for her roles in Lost Boys and Fairies, form an unlikely partnership. They both seem to have a talent for crime-solving in their tight-knit Welsh neighborhood.
John Chapel, portrayed by Spall, is a weary and solitary actor, who gained prominence by playing a detective on TV. On the other hand, Janie Mallowan, played by Keyworth, is an engaging and resolute detective sergeant, who spent her childhood admiring his popular series, Caesar.
Though showing significant disparities in personality and outlook on life, John and Janie surprisingly formed an unusual bond during the initial season, solving several intriguing mysteries together along the way.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can confidently say that Death Valley left audiences spellbound! Not only did it break records by becoming the UK’s largest overnight audience for a fresh scripted series in five years, surpassing Ludwig’s impressive achievement, but it also managed to captivate an average of 4.6 million viewers per episode across the consolidated 28-day ratings. Simply put, Death Valley has truly become a must-watch show!
It’s not unexpected that the BBC has chosen to renew the charming mystery series, adding it to the expanding collection of ‘cozy crime’ shows airing on British TV.

Upon renewal, Keyworth expressed his delight, saying, “It’s fantastic that Janie and John will continue to navigate through more dangerous crime scenes with their arguments. A big thank you to all who watched and showed support for our show!
“I can’t wait to be back ‘corpsing’ with Timothy and the gang for series 2!”
Instead, Jon Petrie, the head of comedy commissioning at the BBC, humorously stated, “Recommissioning Death Valley will likely cause a surge in criminal activity once more in Wales.
If it means we get even better acting from Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth, along with additional scripts penned by Paul Doolan, then we’re willing to accept that cost. We’re thrilled to reunite the team once again for more intrigue and trouble.
Death Valley represents another successful venture for Doolan, a figure well-recognized in comedy circles due to his creation of the British supermarket sitcom Trollied on Sky. Moreover, he has also penned scripts for series such as Bloods and Mammoth.
He expressed to the media that he was extremely pleased with the reception for Death Valley, and hinted that in the second season, John and Janie will encounter a group of clever killers and frequently find themselves at odds with one another.
Josh Cole, head of comedy at BBC Studios, commented: “Though we don’t typically endorse murder, in the extraordinary case of ‘Death Valley,’ we’re delighted to make an exception. The initial season was a smash hit with viewers and Paul’s scripts for season 2 are even more captivating. We’re eagerly anticipating production.
In the second season of Death Valley, viewers can anticipate six episodes, each lasting approximately 45 minutes. Notably, the recurring characters Alexandria Riley as Helen Baxter, Steffan Rhodri as DCI Barry Clarke, Melanie Walters as Yvonne Mallowan, and Rithvik Andugula as DC Evan Chaudhry will rejoin the cast.
Expect a premiere date and guest stars to be announced in due course.
Death Valley is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Season 2 is coming soon.
