Chris Columbus, the director behind the initial Harry Potter movies, has voiced concerns about a significant aspect of the fresh HBO adaptation.
initial images of significant characters were posted by HBO; members of the cast and team were also seen filming at bustling London locations such as King’s Cross station (of course!).
Although the new actors are stepping into well-known roles, some viewers have pointed out that the costumes, such as Nick Frost’s outfit for Hagrid, bear a striking resemblance to those seen in the original movies.
Initially, Hagrid was portrayed by actor Robbie Coltrane. He donned a lengthy brown coat for the character, along with long, wavy hair and a beard of similar length.
Actor Robbie Coltrane played the original Hagrid, sporting a long brown coat, long curly locks, and an equally long beard for the role.
During an episode of The Rest is Entertainment podcast, Columbus noted the resemblance in Nick Frost’s costume: “Yesterday, I came across some photos online showing Nick Frost dressed up as Hagrid.
Currently, it doesn’t appear to be Nick Frost – more likely, this is Martin Bayfield, the former rugby player, who portrayed Hagrid using a large, fake rubber Hagrid mask that was occasionally swapped out for computer-generated imagery (CGI).
It appears as though the photos depict Martin, or at least someone who resembles him, donning a Nick Frost mask and strolling through the streets of London. Remarkably, he is dressed in the very same outfit that we created for Hagrid.

He commented: “A part of me felt, ‘Why bother?’ while another part said, ‘Well, alright then.’ I had expected things to change dramatically, but instead it’s just a continuation of what was already happening, which is intriguing.
I’m genuinely pleased as the costume they’re wearing resembles the Hagrid costume we created. It’s thrilling to see how they’ll utilize it, but at the same time, it feels like a familiar experience.
As a devoted fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming TV series slated for release in 2027! This production promises to breathe new life into the wizarding world we all love, with each thrilling season delving into a different captivating book from JK Rowling’s beloved series.
Columbus, who has stated he prefers not to participate in the remake, recently shared with TopMob magazine his desired additions to the movies. He mentioned, “I regretted that I couldn’t incorporate Peeves in the initial movie.

I couldn’t help but be captivated by a particular scene from the very first book, “Philosopher’s Stone,” where my dear friends Hermione and Harry found themselves tasting potions during a challenge. The tension was palpable, as the grim possibility hung over them that one of them might not make it through. It truly added an exhilarating element to the story!
It was a fantastic game of chess that we unfortunately ran out of time to film. Fingers crossed, these scenes will be re-added in the series as it has a total duration of 10 hours. I genuinely hope they make good use of this additional footage.
J.K. Rowling, the writer of Harry Potter, has encountered criticism over her opinions regarding transgender rights in certain circles. In 2020, she penned a detailed piece outlining her thoughts on discussions about sex and gender – this essay received significant critique and opposition from LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall.

In simpler terms, J.K. Rowling expressed her opinions on various platforms, such as social media, even going so far as to post on X (previously known as Twitter) in 2024, where she maintained that “there are no children who identify as transgender” and argued against the concept of a child being born in a body that doesn’t match their true identity.
In May of 2025, J.K. Rowling established the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, a resource aimed at providing financial assistance for legal aid to those battling for the preservation of women’s rights based on their biological sex.
Actors such as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, who played key roles in the Harry Potter series, have publicly dissociated themselves from J.K. Rowling’s opinions and have expressed their support for the transgender community by issuing statements. Conversely, actors like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have come to Rowling’s defense amidst the criticism she has faced.
