Glastonbury headliners The 1975 leave fans divided over ‘bland’ set as they brand pint-supping frontman Matty Healy ‘insufferable’

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must admit that the performance by The 1975 on the Pyramid stage during the opening day of Glastonbury Festival left quite a stir among the audience at Worthy Farm in Somerset. It seemed that opinions were split amongst the enthusiastic fans who graced the festival grounds.

At their sole performance for the entire year, lead singer Matty Healy, aged 36, appeared jovial as he enjoyed a cigarette and a pint of Guinness prior to performing several popular songs by the band.

On the other hand, the act’s presentation sparked varied opinions among both the festival audience and remote viewers. Some found it dull, leading a few to turn off their screens altogether.

Despite some criticizing the flamboyant frontman, famous for his eccentric actions, labeling him as ‘unbearable’ and ‘not quite embodying the spirit of rock music, more like Aled Jones.’ (A Welsh singer-songwriter known more for classical music than rock)

Taking to X, fans made their feelings very clear on Matty and The 1975’s headlining performance.

They wrote: ‘How terrible was #The1975 at #Glastonbury2025? A man who spent the first half hour stumbling around drinking beer and smoking cigarettes, and the rest of the time messing with his hair, while being in the most dull band possible. It’s hard to believe that Glastonbury could get any worse, right?’

Or even more casually: They wrote: ‘Man, #The1975 at #Glastonbury2025 was terrible! This guy spent the first half hour stumbling around drinking beer and smoking cigarettes, then he just stood there playing with his hair. The whole performance was really boring. I can’t believe Glastonbury could get any worse, can it?’

In my younger years, I attended a show by The 1975, but found myself unimpressed at that time. I decided to give them another chance tonight, unfortunately, it was still disappointing. Their songs all seem to blend together and their lead singer lacks charisma. There were significant empty spaces around us in the front row, which added to the overall underwhelming experience. It seems Glastonbury may have made a misstep with this performance.

Matty Healy appears to be striving for the iconic image of a rocker, donning a leather jacket, sipping on Guinness, and smoking, all while creating rather unremarkable music. This is quite an unusual combination, much like Aled Jones representing the epitome of rock and roll.

I must confess that I enjoy The 1975’s debut album, but Matty Healy seems overly fixated on appearing edgy (which he isn’t). This often feels like an imitation of Liam Gallagher. Despite being the headliner at Glastonbury, he can’t manage to pull off a single night without being arrogant and annoying.

I’ve never watched #the1975 perform live on TV before. If they ever headline at #glastonbury, this would be their one chance. Unfortunately, the lead singer seems more interested in his Guinness and cigarettes, stumbling all over the stage like a teenager on their first drink… The songs come across as vague and uninteresting. Is this the best they’ve got?

Conversely, there was a significant group of fans who adored the setup, describing it as ‘epic’. Many of these fans even lauded Matty for his performance as a frontman.

Or simply:
While others may have disliked it, several fans found the set to be epic and praised Matty’s performance as a frontman.

They wrote on X: ‘Just saw #The1975 they were so good.’

‘Well that was bloody amazing I’m a snotty mess now!! About you was the perfect way to finish it.’

‘Matt Healy a modern front man. That was excellent.’

Before last night’s event, I was familiar with #the1975 but hadn’t listened to any of their songs. However, I really enjoyed their performance, appreciating the diverse range of genres they showcased. All in all, it was a top-notch set that left me eager to catch them at future shows.

If you’re not familiar with the 1975, I can understand if their significance wasn’t clear to you, but for me, that concert was absolutely incredible. The lead singer was amazing, and so was the band.

Matty, the offspring of Denise Welch from Loose Women and Tim Healy from Benidorm, gained notoriety for his bold and captivating performance style, which was evidently on display during his performance at Glastonbury.

The well-known English musician could be spotted performing popular tunes, all the while smoking a cigarette and drinking a pint of Guinness.

In a playful yet confident manner during his performance, I asserted myself as the top songwriter of my generation, offering a humorous twist to the statement.

To kick off, a group that originated from Cheshire, bolstered by a saxophonist, commenced their performance on the Pyramid Stage with “Happiness,” a tune released in 2022’s Being Funny In A Foreign Language. Leading the band was Matty, dressed in a black leather jacket, white T-shirt, and blue jeans, sipping on a pint of stout.

Following the performance of “Part Of The Band”, he took a seat on a stool, lit up a cigarette as he sipped his beverage, and then remarked, “This experience is really driving home the fact that I might just be the foremost songwriter of my era.

‘The best what they say, a poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am.

Allow me to emphasize that the phrases we’re about to hear over the coming moments are poetic, essentially.

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but feel my heart race when they kicked off with “Chocolate” from their stellar 2013 self-titled debut. And just as the final chord rang out, our charismatic frontman quipped playfully, ‘Turns out I was just pulling your leg about being a poet!’

Consisting of four long-time schoolmates, the band – featuring vocalist Matty, bassist Ross McDonald, guitarist Adam Hann, and drummer George Daniel – was set to take the stage at the festival for the very first time.

About halfway through his performance, Matty addressed the crowd saying, “As we’ve been told, utilize your platform, isn’t that correct?

He added: ‘Those tuning in might be somewhat disheartened by the absence of politics in this program and future episodes, as well as several others. This is due to a deliberate choice, one that we have made intentionally, and we strive to ensure our lasting impact is not defined by politics.’

Let’s strive for an atmosphere filled with love and camaraderie, as I believe the world already has enough politics. Instead, I think what’s truly needed is more affection and mutual understanding.

‘Even if it seems simple, I want to remind you young ones who are passionate about that band or similar things, don’t aim for the big stage or fame. Instead, strive for the friendship and love you find in your pursuits. By doing so, failure will never be an option, and I want to express my gratitude for you.’

2016’s hit single “Love Me,” from the album “I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It,” ignites the first communal singing session among the audience. Healy gestures for guitarist Hann to step forward and jokes playfully: “Ladies and gentlemen, in 2025 with no trace of irony, a guitar solo!

In their performance setup, there was a car where Matty sang ‘Somebody Else’ while puffing on a cigarette. Afterward, he exited the vehicle during the song and strolled along a moving belt.

As he was singing “She’s American,” Matty momentarily switched to a rendition of The Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” then resumed performing his own 2016 track afterwards.

Prior to performing his favorite song of 1975 by The 1975, the singer admitted, “For the first time ever, I find myself at a loss for words.

The band ended their set with About You from Being Funny In A Foreign Language.

Prior to the tune, Matty shared: “It’s fashionable to be a bit of a mystery, but I believe authenticity is even more stylish. Rest assured, we’re here to stay, there’s no need for worry – everything will work out just fine.

During the early part of the day, attendees enjoyed impromptu concerts by alternative pop sensation Lorde, who performed her latest album “Virgin” in its entirety, and Lewis Capaldi, who graced the stage two years after a previous performance here when he was dealing with Tourette syndrome challenges.

At the ongoing event, one can see Margot Robbie, famous for her role as Barbie, and her husband, producer Tom Ackerley, who were among the attendees eight months following the birth of their first child. (104 characters)

Yesterday, unexpectedly, thousands of fans enjoyed impromptu concerts by Lewis Capaldi and Lorde.

Lewis held back his emotions as he exclaimed, “I’m back, darling,” during a heartfelt comeback at the legendary Pyramid Stage of Glastonbury.

28-year-old Scottish singer received enthusiastic applause from the vast audience at Worthy Farm, marking a comeback nearly two years after his struggle with Tourette’s Syndrome halted his performance at the festival, causing a temporary break in his career.

Overjoyed to be before a crowd once more, he emotionally declared: “I didn’t think I would return to this stage two years ago, yet here I am again!

Lewis belted out several well-known tunes, then momentarily held back tears while performing the latest release, Survive – a poignant track that echoes the tough times in his career post his last performance at Glastonbury.

In the audience, people were spotted shedding tears and chanting his name prior to singing along with him to the hit song “Someone You Loved.

In a heartfelt address, Lewis expressed: “It’s wonderful to return to Glastonbury. I won’t say much today as I might become emotional, but know that my gratitude knows no bounds for your presence here.

Give it another try, eh? Today’s session is brief, but I thought I’d return to wrap up what I didn’t manage before. And it seemed like an open secret, if you catch my drift.

After his show at Glastonbury, Lewis shared a video on Instagram along with the caption: “What an amazing experience to be back at Glastonbury! Thank you so much for having me back, I appreciate it!

Supporters and well-known acquaintances flocked to the comments, expressing their warm greetings as the gifted artist reemerged in the spotlight.

Paddy McGuinness exclaimed with enthusiasm: “Impressed Boss”, and Jade Thirlwall responded with numerous affectionate emojis, while Sam Fender expressed his enjoyment as “The King is Back” and Alan Shearer simply said “I Love It”.

After an intense performance at Worthy Farm in June 2023, the singer decided to take a break to prioritize his mental wellbeing and adapt to the effects of his recent Tourette’s syndrome diagnosis.

On the initial day at Glastonbury, artists such as CMAT, Lola Young, Alanis Morissette, and Lorde (in a covert performance) were also part of the lineup.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I recently experienced a refreshing revival in the music scene when Rizzle Kicks graced the stage once more, following an extended break of eleven years. To add to the excitement, they welcomed an unexpected special guest onstage with them.

Harley ‘Sylvester’ Alexander-Sule and Jordan Stephens showcased some of their most popular songs, with Jordan inviting his mother to join him for the performance of Mama Do the Hump.

Looking at his mother, who had a green wig on, he excitedly declared: “Let’s applaud my mom!” And with that, the audience erupted in cheers.
