Over the past decade, Netflix has expanded significantly within Hollywood’s contemporary film scene, not just producing originals but also developing franchises. Titles such as Enola Holmes, The Kissing Booth, To All The Boys, Extraction, The Old Guard, and others have seen multiple sequels. Could The Thursday Murder Club be the next franchise to follow suit?
The recently launched Netflix show, accessible for subscribers, boasts a distinguished ensemble cast, has received favorable reviews from critics, and is based on rich literary source material, having been inspired by author Richard Osman’s original novel and its subsequent three sequels. This undoubtedly sets the stage for future success, but it’s also worth mentioning that the creative team behind the production expresses eagerness for more projects. As reported in Entertainment Weekly, director Chris Columbus and the stars of “Thursday Murder Club” express enthusiasm about possibly creating additional films, with Columbus noting his personal passion for adapting multiple stories within a literary series.
If these characters’ charm captivates the audience, I can think of no greater pleasure than to create one or two more movies centered around them over the next three to four years. Frankly, since Harry Potter, this experience has been the most fulfilling in my filmmaking journey. I truly cherish working with these four talented actors, and I’d gladly return for both the second and third films without a moment’s hesitation.
In the recently released Netflix film, Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie star as a group of senior experts who combine their unique abilities to investigate a murder. The book upon which it’s based, published towards the end of 2020 and quickly climbing best-seller lists, has since inspired three consecutive annual sequels: “The Man Who Died Twice”, “The Bullet That Missed”, and “The Last Devil To Die”.
For Mirren, portraying the retired spy Elizabeth Best, making a sequel isn’t just about revisiting her character or spinning another thrilling tale. It’s also about reuniting with her co-stars, who were reportedly very supportive during the filming process.
We’d be thrilled for another gathering! We had a fantastic experience, bonding as a group. Our interactions were not just about the performances, but also about getting to know each other on a deeper level. So, a reunion seems like something we’d all look forward to.
It wouldn’t be too challenging for Pierce Brosnan to make a new installment of “The Midnight Murder Club.” Given his history with film franchises, it seems fitting that he would continue portraying the character of former union leader Ron Ritchie. As Brosnan put it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: “Why not?
If they want me to come back, I would be more than happy.
Celia Imire, the actress portraying Joyce Meadowcroft in the 2025 Netflix film, expressed a somewhat superstitious viewpoint regarding the question and appears to be cautious about not jinxing the possibility of a sequel. However, she couldn’t think of any reason that would persuade her to decline adapting “The Man Who Died Twice” or any other books.
I don’t want to spook things, but if there was a second film, why not?
Joining forces with acting legends like Ben Kingsley, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Tom Ellis, and Richard E. Grant, The Thursday Murder Club is now available for streaming. Although it’s too early to tell if this series will spawn sequels, it’s reassuring to know that a significant portion of the main cast is eager and ready to participate in future installments if given the opportunity.
