As a passionate comic book enthusiast, I’ve always noticed that superhero comics and horror stories are often kept separate like day and night. Superheroes stand for justice and good fight against crime and villains, while horror comics delve into the darker, twisted realms of fear and terror. However, Philip Kennedy Johnson has brilliantly blurred these lines in his recent works, as if he’s been on a mission to mash up these genres.
Incredibly, every comic title that Johnson touches seems to transform into a spine-tingling horror story. The upcoming series, “The Infernal Hulk,” due in November, promises to bring body horror to the Hulk like never before. If that wasn’t chilling enough, there’s also the cosmic zombie tale unfolding in “Green Lantern: War Journal.”
But wait, it gets even more intriguing! Johnson has also weaved a ghost mystery into the capes and cowls of “Batman and Robin.” It appears that the realm of horror and superheroes is no longer mutually exclusive; instead, they’re intertwining to create some truly captivating stories.
Johnson has demonstrated his versatility by merging heroic narratives with chilling horror elements, producing an exceptional outcome that we eagerly anticipate continuing. Seven characters are proposed as potential candidates for such sinister storytelling.
By altering the phrasing and using more common words, the passage becomes easier to understand and reads more naturally.
7) Spider-Man
As a die-hard film fan, I’ve always found Spider-Man’s origin to be distinctly sci-fi at its core. Despite encountering a gallery of villains who are undeniably creepy in their own right, the wall-crawler hasn’t faced off against an outright horror antagonist. Though he’s tangled with Mephisto, Morbius the living vampire, and everyone’s worst nightmare – Paul Rabin, none of these foes belong to the heart of horror genre. There’s still room for Peter Parker to confront a truly terrifying adversary born from the world of pure horror.
Instead of just focusing on his spider-like abilities, it might be intriguing to delve deeper into body horror aspects related to these powers. Additionally, revisiting the character’s symbiote days could also offer fresh perspectives. Given his generally upbeat demeanor, it would be captivating to see how he copes with foes typically encountered in a Batman comic or even encounters with ghostly entities. Taking this creative route with the character carries some degree of risk, but if executed skillfully, the rewards could be substantial.
6) Daredevil
Although old Hornhead might currently be handling some otherworldly dangers, there’s room for an increase in intensity given his usual dark and brooding style. Given that he’s well-suited to such themes, it seems fitting to explore even more horror elements. The most recent example we’ve seen is Muse, and the direction should lean further towards this genre. Enhancing the supernatural aspects of The Hand could also lead Daredevil onto a path focused more on horror.
An alternative perspective could be exploring the impact of Matt’s Catholic faith on his perceptions of supernatural beings, particularly demons. Given the inherent connection between religion and horror, and considering Matt’s own use of demonic imagery, there’s a wealth of exciting possibilities to explore with one of Marvel’s most compelling characters. The unsettling nature of his stories suggests that a full-blown horror approach could fit him exceptionally well.
5) Namor
Despite not having many standalone comics under his belt, Namor deserves more recognition and exploring the mystery of the deep sea provides ample opportunity for this. With so much unknown about our oceans and eerie tales connected to them, it seems like an ideal setting to inject a horror element into Namor’s storyline.
If Marvel aims to establish Namor as a formidable competitor to Aquaman, they might want to take a dramatic approach by unleashing the kraken, making the Submariner’s storyline more intense.
4) Captain America
The heroic soldier from Marvel could offer an intriguing lead character in a chilling horror tale. Picture a dedicated warrior who always strives for good, facing off against ghastly undead beings. This character’s journey of sacrificing his principles to save not only himself but also the tormented populace would create a captivating narrative. For Steve, this darker role might feel very fitting. If Bucky or Sam, as Captain America, were included in this horror plotline, it could make for an equally thrilling read. It seems that exploring Captain America within a traditional horror setting holds immense, unrealized potential.
3) The Ultimates
Deniz Camp’s “The Ultimates” presents a team reminiscent of the Avengers, but with a generational twist. Plunged in a dystopian reality, introducing more horrifying adversaries could enhance the narrative’s impact. Given their readiness to confront supernatural or fantastical entities, a horror element seems fitting for these particular heroes.
United by shared experiences, this unconventional family has proven resilient enough to confront harrowing perils and appear unfazed, as if such encounters were commonplace. Each member of this group has already endured a multitude of hardships in their individual narratives, making them ideal candidates for protagonists in a horror genre.
2) The New Mutants
The New Mutants are almost becoming a terror-themed title, given their existing supernatural elements. To fully embrace this genre, they should boldly confront it head-on. With entities such as the demon bear, Warlock’s father the Magus, and Magik’s demonic form from Limbo, they already have an otherworldly horror vibe. By tackling more horrific foes like zombies, they could solidify their status as a horror comic. This would indeed make for an intriguing shift in their narrative.
1) Sabertooth
It’s an intriguing idea to reimagine a horror novel where Sabertooth serves as the antagonist instead of the hero. His menacing nature makes him perfect for such a role, and delving deeper into his dark side would take this character development to another level. Pairing him with a protagonist other than Wolverine could lead to a narrative that explores both characters in depth, especially since Sabertooth’s horror aspects have yet to be fully realized. Embracing the horror genre seems like a natural progression for Sabertooth’s character arc.
