10 Talented Actors the MCU Completely Wasted

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the meteoric rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to become one of the most triumphant film franchises ever conceived. This success wouldn’t have been possible without an array of incredibly talented actors gracing our screens with their exceptional performances. Right from the debut of the MCU, it was evident that this universe boasted a remarkable reservoir of talent, and over the years, it has continued to draw in celebrated thespians and highly esteemed performers. This influx of talent has resulted in numerous brilliant actors donning various roles within the MCU’s adaptation of Marvel Comics stories, be it as heroes, villains, or supporting characters of varying significance. Regrettably, not all of these gifted actors have been utilized to their full potential.

In many MCU films and series, there are numerous instances where exceptionally skilled and gifted actors have been underutilized. Their abilities in dramatic performances were seldom explored, their comic timing was often overlooked, or their characters departed from the franchise prematurely. Regrettably, some of the MCU’s most promising talents haven’t fully realized their potential within this universe. It’s unfortunate to note that not all gifted actors have been given the opportunity to shine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

1) Rebecca Hall

Rebecca Hall, while not as widely recognized as some other actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showcases a remarkable talent. With notable performances in films like “The Town,” “The Prestige,” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” Rebecca Hall has built an illustrious career adorned with multiple awards and nominations. Her skill to excel across various film genres underscores her versatility, even though this facet wasn’t fully demonstrated through her portrayal of Maya Hansen in the Marvel movie “Iron Man 3.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Rebecca Hall’s character, Maya Hansen, was significantly underutilized despite being pivotal in the film’s storyline. She initially played a role as Tony Stark’s former love interest, but later, her character was unveiled as a cunning antagonist, only to be abruptly terminated by Aldrich Killian. Despite Hansen’s portrayal of an intelligent biologist and Hall’s promising acting skills, the MCU failed to fully capitalize on these strengths.

2) Natalie Dormer

In her one-time appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Natalie Dormer’s acting career was already gaining momentum. Known for her role as Anne Boleyn on The Tudors, Dormer was rapidly becoming a household name when she joined the cast of Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011, playing Private Lorraine. Her character was significant for being the one who spontaneously kissed Steve Rogers, creating friction between him and Peggy Carter within the MCU.

In the years that unfolded, my career blossomed with notable roles like Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones and Cressida in The Hunger Games series. However, these high-profile appearances merely underscored the unfortunate fact that my brief stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe didn’t do justice to my abilities. Regrettably, given Captain America: The First Avenger being set so far back in time, there was no feasible way for the franchise to rectify this misstep, leaving the MCU with an underutilized Natalie Dormer.

3) Eric André

Among the intriguing newcomers in the cast of Ironheart, there’s Eric André, a well-known comedian and actor who gained fame from creating and starring in The Eric André Show. His involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series was initially intriguing as it was later disclosed that he would portray Rampage, a character from the comics linked to the Punisher. However, the initial three episodes of Ironheart showed that the franchise didn’t have significant plans for André’s character.

Following his presentation as Stuart Clarke, better known by his alias Rampage – a tech-adept yet untrustworthy member of the Hood’s gang – André’s character was swiftly taken over by Riri Williams. After leaving the team, it is subsequently disclosed that Stuart met with an offscreen demise, presumably eliminating any possibility for Eric André to revisit his role in the MCU. If this turns out to be true, the MCU would have recruited a highly skilled comedic actor but denied him the opportunity to showcase his talents within the franchise.

4) Cate Blanchett

The film Thor: Ragnarok, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga, was highly acclaimed due to its captivating plot and clever humor. Additionally, it introduced several talented actors to the MCU, such as Cate Blanchett portraying Hela. With her Academy Award win and impressive career accomplishments, Blanchett’s inclusion in the MCU suggested that the franchise would keep attracting top-tier Hollywood talent.

Unfortunately, Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Hela in “Thor: Ragnarok” was cut short more than it merited. The movie concluded with Hela appearing to be killed by Surtur when he consumed Asgard, effectively ending her storyline. Despite the impressive performance Blanchett delivered as Hela, it’s challenging not to feel that an actress of her caliber could have been utilized in a more impactful way within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Her casting certainly hinted at greater potential, and it seems that the MCU didn‘t fully capitalize on Blanchett’s talent.

5) Mads Mikkelsen

2016 marked the point when Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) unveiled a fresh magical dimension within its universe with “Doctor Strange”. I, for one, was thrilled to see Mads Mikkelsen finally join the MCU, a casting choice many fans had eagerly anticipated. In “Doctor Strange”, he portrayed Kaecilius, a sorcerer who succumbed to dark powers and became the film’s main adversary for our titular hero. Mikkelsen’s renown as an actor with remarkable range and depth made his presence all the more intriguing.

In “Doctor Strange”, Mikkelsen’s character Kaecilius wasn’t the menacing villain that many had anticipated. The script limited Mikkelsen’s opportunities, making his performance seem somewhat stiff and overshadowed by complex CGI effects. Although these effects were visually stunning, they didn’t aid in giving life to the villain. Moreover, the movie’s ending saw him trapped in the Dark Dimension, reducing the chances of his return and emphasizing the limited role Mikkelsen was given within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

6) Zachary Levi

Despite primarily being recognized as Shazam from the DCEU, Zachary Levi had previously dabbled in the superhero realm within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, he missed out on the chance to play a role in 2011’s Thor, instead appearing as Fandral in subsequent films – Thor: The Dark World in 2013 and Thor: Ragnarok in 2017. Sadly, Fandral met his end at the hands of Hela in Ragnarok, thus concluding his tale in the MCU before it could be fully developed or explored.

Zachary Levi’s comedic acting skills and his impressive portrayal as a top hero in the DCEU showcase how underutilized he was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Whenever granted a substantial or intriguing role, Levi has consistently outshone others; however, in the MCU, his character, Fandral, was merely a trivial footnote, failing to fully utilize his remarkable talent.

7) Michael Rosenbaum

Michael Rosenbaum may not be the most well-known actor within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but it’s clear that the franchise didn’t utilize his talents fully. Rosenbaum portrayed Martinex in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” a role that felt more like a brief appearance than a substantial character development. Given that Martinex has been part of Marvel Comics stories since the 1960s, there was ample material to create a significant role for him within the MCU.

Despite having great potential, the franchise failed to capitalize on it, leaving Michael Rosenbaum with little role to play. His presence was well-received due to his past successes in superhero franchises, particularly as Lex Luthor in Smallville. However, casting such a seasoned actor only for a minor appearance seems like an unnecessary squandering of talent. There’s hope that Rosenbaum may get more opportunities to portray Martinex in the MCU, but at present, the franchise has missed out on utilizing a highly skilled actor.

8) John Krasinski

John Krasinski, who gained popularity for his character Jim Halpert on “The Office,” has a versatile career that extends beyond acting to directing as well. His directorial debut, “A Quiet Place,” showcased his talent for dramatic roles, and his portrayal of Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was a testament to this versatility. However, the MCU failed to utilize Krasinski’s talents fully, making his casting more of a momentary tribute to fans rather than a significant contribution to the series.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), John Krasinski’s portrayal of Mr. Fantastic was tragically cut short shortly after his debut, when the Scarlet Witch brutally killed the character. Given Krasinski’s widespread admiration and fittingness for the part, it felt like a missed opportunity, as he was only granted two substantial scenes in the role. This unexpected turn of events not only made an impactful mark in MCU history due to its shock value, but also serves as another instance highlighting how the franchise sometimes provides talented actors with limited material to showcase their skills.

9) Walton Goggins

Walton Goggins’ career is brimming with numerous accomplishments, spanning over two decades as a character actor. This long-standing role in various TV series and films elevated him to prominence and earned him recognition for his exceptional versatility as an actor. Having showcased his talent across virtually every genre, Goggins has endeared himself to global audiences who appreciate his remarkable acting skills.

In 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, Walton Goggins made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as secondary antagonist Sonny Burch, a minor criminal seeking Hank Pym’s technology for personal profit. However, compared to Ghost, the film’s primary superpowered villain, Burch had limited screen time and was mostly portrayed as running from both heroes and villains. Despite this, Goggins delivered an impressive performance, but the MCU didn’t provide many opportunities for him to fully develop Sonny Burch into a truly memorable character.

10) Robert Redford

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s often acknowledged that Robert Redford, who first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is one of the most esteemed and honored actors. This film, considered one of the MCU’s finest, suggests that an actor of Redford’s caliber would likely have been given a significant role. However, despite his illustrious background, Redford portrayed Alexander Pierce, the Secretary of the World Security Council, who was also a high-ranking, covert Hydra officer. Regrettably, the part did not offer the screen time that such an accomplished actor deserved.

In the film “The Winter Soldier“, Redford’s screen time was surprisingly limited and his character is one that stands out least among others. Given Redford’s iconic reputation, this decision seems unusual, particularly since the movie ends with his death, denying him the chance to contribute more to the series. Casting a talent like Robert Redford for only a few scenes feels odd at best, and at worst, it’s an unnecessary squandering of a gifted actor’s skills.
