The 2020s have been an unusual period for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After breaking box office records with the epic Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios encountered challenges in maintaining their success. The rise of streaming services led to a significant shift, marked by Disney+’s takeover, but while there were some notable projects, overall the strategy didn’t yield the desired results. Movies also faced setbacks, as films such as Eternals missed the mark with audiences, necessitating abandonment of plans for a popular property. Yet, not everything was dismal, as certain characters effortlessly navigated the chaos and paved the way for intriguing future developments.
After the release of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man continued his cinematic success with two more films. Now, a third film is in production, directed by Daniel Destin Cretton who shone brightly with his first Marvel Cinematic Universe project. As for a potential Shang-Chi sequel, there may be some adjustments necessary if the creators aim to honor the title character effectively.
Avengers: Doomsday Will Be More of the Same for Shang-Chi
In Simu Liu’s first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) outing, his character initially appears to be an ordinary valet in San Francisco. However, as suggested by comic book characters often having hidden depths, when the Ten Rings come knocking, he astoundingly displays exceptional martial arts abilities.
Later, Shang-Chi uncovers that his father is on a quest to find Ta Lo, an alternate reality village where he believes his deceased wife is being imprisoned. The Mandarin, with malicious intent, aims to eliminate anyone obstructing him, which clashes with Shang-Chi’s values. Consequently, Shang-Chi gathers the courage to confront the Mandarin, despite being outmatched. In the ensuing battle, his father realizes the error of his ways and hands over the magical Ten Rings before his demise. The rings then serve as a catalyst for Shang-Chi’s understanding of the intricate world he lives in, setting the stage for further development in future MCU appearances.
Following an encounter with Bruce Banner, Carol Danvers, and Wong, Shang-Chi has joined Earth’s strongest heroes. During the events of “Avengers: Doomsday”, a recruitment attempt is expected for him against Doctor Doom, which should not pose a problem given his martial arts skills. However, it’s important to note that the Ten Rings grant Shang-Chi much more than just fighting abilities. Although his encounter with Robert Downey Jr.’s villain may result in peril, it seems that Shang-Chi still has more adventures ahead, as a sequel to his solo film is planned. The Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to have missed an opportunity by delaying the production of “Shang-Chi 2”, but they can rectify this by delving deeper into the character’s comic book origins and returning to a genre that has been successful for the franchise.
The Second Shang-Chi Movie Should Be a Spy Thriller
In the comic books, Shang-Chi’s journey mirrors his cinematic one as he is initially trained by his father to become an assassin. During one of these missions in London, instead of completing his task of killing a doctor, Shang-Chi encounters MI-6 agents, forming bonds with them. It doesn’t take long before the skilled martial artist transitions from being a hitman into a spy, secretly dismantling various organizations from within. Eventually, Jimmy Woo becomes aware of Shang-Chi’s covert activities and extends an invitation for him to join the Agents of Atlas. Through teamwork with this group, Shang-Chi gains valuable insights into life beyond his father’s influence, which should be reflected in his storyline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) excels when it combines several superheroes to confront a shared adversary, as seen in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” with Steve Rogers, Black Widow, and Falcon. This movie also stands out due to its spy-thriller narrative that challenges the conventional boundaries of a comic book film. Similarly, “Shang-Chi 2” could follow suit by teaming Shang-Chi with some spies and introducing Woo into the mix. With such backup, Shang-Chi would be well positioned to ascend as one of the MCU’s most influential characters.
