Working in a renowned series such as Harry Potter can be both thrilling and stressful for an actor. The presence of a devoted fanbase yearning for the upcoming episodes means that the production team faces immense pressure to produce a top-notch product. Countless hours are spent perfecting even the smallest details before filming begins. Actors, in particular, face a tough task as they bring beloved characters to life. They must strive for authenticity while also adding their unique touch. Every actor yearns for a trouble-free set experience, but unfortunately, Domhnall Gleeson didn’t have such luck.
On his interview with Seth Meyers’ Late Night show, Gleeson reminisced about his disastrous first day on the Harry Potter set. The Irish actor struggled to adopt an English accent for his role as Bill Weasley and ended up speaking Australian instead. “I started talking Aussie and I couldn’t stop,” Gleeson admitted. “I did it on the very first take, with around 300 people on set, and the director stopped production, creating a tense silence. The director then approached me and asked, ‘So you’re Australian… is there anything you can do about it?’ … That day was one of the worst in my life. But things gradually improved.
Domhnall Gleeson Had a Small Role in the Harry Potter Movies
In the beloved book series, Bill Weasley was introduced for the first time in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”. However, his character’s screen counterpart, played by Gleeson, had a more minimal role throughout the story. Bill was portrayed by Gleeson only in two films: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2”. By the time he joined the cast, the Harry Potter franchise had already become a worldwide sensation. All the preceding movies had enjoyed great box office success, positioning Harry Potter as one of the most influential film series of its time.
In the two films, Gleeson’s screen presence is minimal with only a few dialogues. One memorable scene where he appeared is at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, when some of Harry’s associates drink Polyjuice Potion to transform into Harry and deceive Voldemort’s troops. Furthermore, in the climactic battle at Hogwarts, Bill was among those who fought during the film’s thrilling finale.
Despite having limited screen time in movies up until now (which could change with HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV show, featuring several members of the Weasley family), Gleeson approached his role earnestly and aimed to deliver an outstanding performance. Given that all other Weasleys had British accents, it seemed unusual for one sibling to speak in a different dialect. It’s likely that nerves played a role in Gleeson adopting an Australian accent. At the time, he was relatively unknown and might have felt the weight of joining such a renowned franchise during the final installments.
In a fortunate turn of events, after getting over his initial Australian dialect, Gleeson successfully adopted an English accent in his roles. Despite having only a few lines across two films, his portrayal of Bill never seemed out of place. He convincingly embodied the eldest Weasley sibling on screen. Unfortunately, due to limited screen time, this talented actor’s potential was not fully explored. It would have been exciting to see how he might have developed the character if the film adaptation of Bill had been more faithful to the original source material.
