Sophie Turner, renowned for her role in Game of Thrones, has been officially chosen to portray the iconic character Lara Croft in Amazon Prime Video’s forthcoming Tomb Raider remake.
Production for the upcoming TV show, modeled after the legendary Tomb Raider video games, kicks off in January 2026.
The project is devised by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the award-winning creator of Fleabag, following her signing an exclusive three-year contract with Amazon in 2019.
On Wednesday, September 3rd, it was revealed by Waller-Bridge that Sophie Turner (known for her role as Sansa Stark in HBO’s fantasy series) is set to portray the renowned video game character.

Turner expressed her immense joy and excitement about portraying Lara Croft, adding that she’s equally known for her role as Jean Grey from the X-Men movie franchise.
She went on to say, ‘This character is truly iconic and deeply meaningful to countless people. I am putting my heart and soul into this role. It’s a big challenge stepping into shoes previously filled by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who gave such stellar performances. But with Phoebe Waller-Bridge leading the way, we (and Lara) are in extremely capable hands. I can hardly wait for you to see what we’re working on.'”
The revised text maintains the original meaning while making it sound more natural and easier to read by using simpler sentence structures, changing some phrases (“continued” -> “went on to say”), and improving the flow of ideas.
In the past, Angelina Jolie and most recently, Alicia Vikander, have taken on the role in film adaptations.
Vernon Sanders from Prime Video stated: ‘Lara Croft is undeniably one of the most famous and emblematic video game characters ever created. We’re beyond excited to have the incredibly talented Sophie Turner step into the role, embodying Lara’s characteristic bravery, power, and unwavering determination. With Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm, this series will celebrate the cherished Tomb Raider legacy while serving up new thrilling escapades for fans everywhere.’
In addition to the upcoming series, Chad Hodge (known for Wayward Pines and Good Behavior) will share showrunning duties with Waller-Bridge, while Jonathan Van Tulleken (notable for Shōgun and The Changeling) will take on the role of director.
A release date is yet to be confirmed.
