Reflecting back, it’s hard to believe it’s been over ten years since 2014, a remarkable year for movies. Blockbusters such as “John Wick,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Nightcrawler,” and “The LEGO Movie” graced our screens, but the year stood out particularly for comic book films. Marvel led the charge with releases like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Yet, it was a non-Marvel comic book production that made its debut in 2014, captivating audiences and pushing the boundaries in comic book adaptations.
Discussing here is the action-packed spy film, “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” directed by Matthew Vaughn. This movie catapulted its lead actor, Taron Egerton, into stardom. Regrettably, the film wasn’t available on major streaming platforms for a while, but starting in September, that problem was resolved. On the first day of September, “Kingsman” made its way back to Hulu, making it conveniently accessible again for those who stream movies.
According to the comic written by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, Kingsman is an entertaining spy thriller that delves into a clandestine organization dedicated to espionage. The movie was highly popular, grossing over $414 million at the box office upon its wide release in early 2015, following its initial screening in December 2014. Subsequently, Vaughn directed both a sequel titled Kingsman: The Golden Circle and a prequel set during World War II known as The King’s Man.
The Best Comic Movies of 2014
Regarding the movie “Kingsman”, it’s an outstanding film that seems perfect for multiple viewings. However, labeling it as the top comic book adaptation might be challenging, given the exceptional year for such movies. In fact, the Marvel Cinematic Universe released two standouts – “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” – which are often cited among the best in their franchise, making direct comparison difficult.
In that same year, Fox put out the movie “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which is still highly cherished in the X-Men series. This film combined elements from the original trilogy with those from “X-Men: First Class,” resulting in an extraordinary team-up experience that remains a classic. Additionally, Disney released “Big Hero 6,” based on a Marvel comic and featuring a cameo by Stan Lee, as well as Sony’s premiere of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” that year.
Kingsman ranks high among those films, possibly third or fourth, considering the exceptional quality of the top-tier movies in the list. If we consider Kingsman as a 2015 film – it hit theaters worldwide that year – then it’s plausible to argue that it could be the best comic book movie of that year. Compared to the other notable 2015 releases, such as Ant-Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron (from the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and the less favorably received Fantastic Four reboot, Kingsman’s quality certainly stands out.
