Why I Think Superman: Man of Tomorrow Is the Perfect Superman Sequel

James Gunn is swiftly broadening the scope of the DC Universe, not just in terms of box office success but also within the multiverse. He recently revealed the next thrilling installment, which is a sequel to the Superman storyline titled Man of Tomorrow. This new film is scheduled for release on July 9th, 2027, approximately two years following the record-breaking Superman movie that ignited the DC Universe.

Following an impressive $600 million earnings at the box office, it’s no wonder that Gunn and DC Studios are keen on another Superman movie. However, the quick production of Man of Tomorrow goes beyond just box office success. Despite the vast array of planets and a multiverse of at least 99 dimensions in the DCU, as shown in Peacemaker Season 2, Superman seems to be Gunn’s preferred symbol for the franchise. Just as his comics run suggests, Superman is a crucial element in the DCU, and Man of Tomorrow could potentially strengthen his influence in the cinematic universe even more.

Superman Could Restore his Tainted Image in Man of Tomorrow

In the movie “Superman”, though Lex Luthor didn’t succeed in killing Superman, he did effectively distance the Kryptonian hero from humans. This was achieved by broadcasting a compelling video message from Jor-El and his wife Lara, which instructed Superman to rule Earth. The message, in effect, damaged the public’s trust and admiration for the flying superhero.

From my perspective as a devoted fan, what once seemed like a comforting presence and selfless savior, Superman, rapidly transformed into a worldwide menace in people’s eyes due to the viral videos. Even Guy Gardner, who typically remains calm, shows signs of restlessness at the thought of an out-of-control Superman. If the situation requires it, he’s even willing to confront him head-on. While some continue to trust his motives, a growing number have developed intense skepticism and malice towards Superman. This stems from the dread that he might not be here to protect us, but to dominate with an iron fist instead.

Despite whether his parents’ message remained untouched or not, Superman finds himself on a difficult journey to rebuild his sullied reputation. However, it’s possible that he can regain trust and credibility in the future film, “Man of Tomorrow.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow Could Feature an Alien Invasion

Initially, the title “Man of Tomorrow ” for the upcoming Superman sequel implies that this storyline may focus on humans eventually welcoming and understanding Superman better. This could be due to his recognized acts of rescuing innocent animals and preventing nuclear conflicts. Alternatively, in “Man of Tomorrow“, it’s possible that Superman wins over humanity by aiding Earth’s defense against a hostile alien species, unlike the friendly Kryptonians.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I was thrilled when Gunn shared some intriguing artwork during his social media tease of the upcoming Superman sequel. This artwork hinted at an unexpected alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor, suggesting that a formidable enemy is on the horizon, compelling these adversaries to temporarily put aside their differences.

The artwork also revealed that Luthor will be donning his warsuit in the movie, which grants him enhanced powers to rival the Man of Steel himself. The specifics are yet to be disclosed, but it’s safe to assume that a cataclysmic event (with a heavy dose of villainy) is needed for Superman to align with the man who stole his cherished dog.

Given the circumstances, an alien invasion might just be the seismic disaster that brings these two titans together, as they face an extraterrestrial threat that could shake the very foundations of our world.

If an intergalactic threat were to target Earth, Superman might win back people’s trust by courageously defending our planet from this threat. This action would demonstrate that his goal isn’t domination but protection of Earth. Born on Krypton, Superman regards Earth as his home and wouldn’t think twice about standing up for it in times of danger. In such a situation, Brainiac or any other extraterrestrial menace attacking Earth, Superman would swiftly join the fight to safeguard our world.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow May Draw Inspiration From the Titular Animated Movie

The nickname “Man of Tomorrow” is commonly associated with Superman and has been utilized extensively across different mediums such as comics from the 90s and a 2020 animated film. In this animated portrayal, his origin story was revitalized, and an interesting twist unfolded when Superman partnered with Lex Luthor after losing his powers in prison. For the purpose of defeating Parasite, a being that steals energy and copies abilities, Superman, Luthor, and Lobo (who is set to debut in Supergirl) join forces, creating an unexpected alliance.

Although Gunn’s “Man of Tomorrow” may not follow a direct script, the idea of a Superman, Lex Luthor, and Lobo joining forces is intriguing. Further information on Superman: Man of Tomorrow will be released soon, but at this stage, the eagerly awaited film seems to promise an excellent continuation for Superman.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is in development for release in 2027.
