Initially, the first symbiote depicted in Marvel Comics wasn’t recognized as such, instead appearing as a sentient suit for Spider-Man. This was none other than Venom, but when Peter Parker discarded the symbiote, it bonded with Eddie Brock, setting events into motion. The symbiote’s introduction in Secret Wars evolved into a villainous role in Spider-Man comics and eventually ascended to become one of the formidable anti-heroes within the Marvel Comics universe. Symbiotes are known for producing offspring that search for hosts, thereby multiplying their numbers and introducing numerous powerful symbiotes across Marvel Comics.
Explore the strongest symbiotes in Marvel Comics, arranged according to their power level, starting from Venom’s initial brood up to the ruler of all symbiotes.
Delve into the ranking of the most powerful symbiotes in Marvel Comics, with Venom’s first offspring serving as the foundation and culminating at the king of all symbiotes.
10) Rascal
In Marvel Comics, Norman Osborn was the initial Red Goblin character. But later on, it’s Normie Osborn, Norman’s grandson, who became the current Red Goblin. This Red Goblin’s symbiote is named Rascal and has an interesting history. It started as an offspring of Bedlam, which was originally with Kang the Conqueror. Later, it was sent to the 21st Century where it mixed with a bit of Carnage symbiote. After that, Dylan Brock nabbed it, and eventually, Normie bonded with this symbiote. To learn how to manage his powers better, Red Goblin joined the Avengers Academy. However, unlike other symbiotes, he’s less powerful due to an incomplete bond with Normie, often causing him to act impulsively and become difficult to control.
9) Lasher
Lasher, the second symbiote produced by the Life Foundation, joined forces with Ramón Hernández. Prior to this bonding, Ramón was a formidable adversary as he worked as a mercenary for the corporation. Tragically, Ramón met his end during the initial confrontation with Venom and Spider-Man in San Francisco. However, Lasher was later reanimated, and he aided Eddie Brock in escaping prison, with the goal of reaching out to other extraterrestrial symbiotes located beyond Earth. In the end, Scream annihilated all symbiotes created by the Life Foundation, but it was Lasher who met his final demise at her hands.
8) Maniac
In a turn of events, the Venom symbiote connected with a man named Lee Price. Initially, this symbiote sought a new host desperately, and Lee was able to resist its influence due to his mental fortitude. However, when Lee lost the Venom symbiote during his arrest, he managed to prove in court that it was Venom responsible for all his criminal actions.
In his search for another symbiote, he encountered Mania and injured her. Subsequently, he claimed Mania as his own, renaming it Maniac. He distributed fragments of this new symbiote among his gang members, bestowing them with supernatural powers. This led to a confrontation between him, Spider-Man, and Agent Anti-Venom.
Lee met his demise when Maniac was extracted from his body, but later resurfaced as Zombiote.
7) Scream
Donna Diego, now known as Scream, is one of the five powerful symbiotes birthed by The Life Foundation, a corporation that abducted Venom and extracted his essence to create these new beings. They bestowed these symbiotes upon their top employees, with Donna Diego becoming Scream. Among the five, Scream and Lasher were the strongest, while the others included Agony, Phage, and Riot. Initially, Scream was just a Venom duplicate, but over time, she developed additional abilities such as camouflaging and shape-shifting. She also exhibits signs of mental instability, making her one of The Life Foundation’s most dangerous symbiotes, and it was Scream who ultimately ended the lives of the other four.
6) Tantrum
In the recent developments of Marvel Comics, Tantrum – a relatively fresh symbiote character – is set to make its debut within the pages of Spider-Gwen’s comic books. This storyline unfolds around Gwen Stacy from Earth-65, previously known as Ghost-Spider and currently residing on Earth-616. An unexpected addition to the Marvel Universe, Tantrum is Gwen’s old symbiote, giving her a version of Venom in this universe. A significant comeback for this symbiote since Gwen rejected it is scheduled for October. According to writer Stephanie Phillips, Tantrum embodies everything that Gwen has left behind, such as chaos, anger, and guilt. It appears that Tantrum will be the next formidable symbiote in Marvel Comics, but its true power remains to be discovered.
5) Sleeper
The symbiote known as Sleeper was the seventh offspring of Venom, hatched at Alchemax’s space biology lab. Eddie Brock and Venom took responsibility for its care, ensuring it wasn’t bonded prematurely and shielding it from Liz Allen’s questionable business dealings. In a critical moment, Sleeper bonded with Eddie to save Venom from Tel-Kar, the first host of Venom’s father – a Kree soldier. This union demonstrated Sleeper’s strength, as he took control of Tel-Kar’s body, erasing his consciousness and using it as a pawn to traverse the cosmos.
Sleeper played a significant role in the “King in Black” saga, defending Dylan Brock and Normie Osborn on Earth. He also featured prominently in the “Extreme Carnage” storyline, bonding with Hank Hensley. In contemporary Marvel comics, Rick Jones is now Sleeper’s host.
4) Carnage
Following Venom, Carnage was the subsequent symbiote introduced by Marvel Comics. Born while Eddie Brock was incarcerated, Carnage formed a bond with another prison inmate, Cletus Kasady – a ruthless serial killer with no trace of empathy. Given his chilling nature, Carnage effortlessly merged with Kasady, transforming into one of Marvel Comics’ most lethal adversaries, one who seems unredeemable. Symbiotes usually surpass their progenitors in power, making Carnage stronger than Venom. It took the combined efforts of Venom and Spider-Man to subdue him. In storylines such as “Maximum Carnage” and “Extreme Carnage”, he showcased himself as one of the most formidable symbiotes ever to emerge in Marvel Comics, posing a significant threat.
3) Toxin
In a twist of events, Carnage, not knowing any better, was the parent of Toxin. Fearing that this child could grow into an all-powerful being, he attempted to eliminate it. However, the ordeal left Carnage weakened. Instead, Toxin latched onto New York City police officer Patrick Mulligan. Given that his host was a virtuous cop and a hero, Toxin developed a conscience – something rare among symbiotes. This unique trait made him a hero too, as he demonstrated his immense power by overpowering both Venom and Carnage when they tried to harm him.
Because of its bond with a police officer, Spider-Man found trust in Toxin, distinguishing it from other symbiotes. They formed an alliance. Tragically, Toxin’s life was taken by Blackheart, the offspring of Mephisto.
2) Grendel
Grendel, an ancient and demonic creature, was crafted by the entity known as Knull and sent to wreak havoc and consume whatever crossed its path. In the 6th Century on Earth-616, Thor managed to subdue it and locked it away in a glacier. However, during modern times, SHIELD inadvertently uncovered it, and Knull reconnected with it, leading to a destructive rampage through New York City that required confrontation by Venom and various Marvel superheroes. As a symbiote-dragon with divine powers granted by Knull, Grendel possesses strength surpassing most other symbiotes, and is also immortal – a trait that sets him apart from others of his kind.
1) Knull
Knull is not classified as a symbiote, instead he’s an ancient god of darkness who rules over symbiotes. He’s the one responsible for creating every single symbiote that exists, making them in his image. Nicknamed the King in Black, the first symbiote he ever created is called the All-Black the Necrosword. This powerful being was formed when Knull used a sword to behead a Celestial. As a god, Knull’s abilities surpass those of most other deities, and he has the unique power to generate more symbiotes and their variations through his eldritch darkness. He also retains control over them from great distances.
