It appears that the developers of the revitalized Wolfenstein series are optimistic about the release of a third installment. In 2014, MachineGames, a studio made up of former Starbreeze team members, debuted their first game: “Wolfenstein: The New Order.” This was a fresh start for a cherished gaming franchise and a series that pioneered genres, so the expectations were high. Yet, the game turned out to be a massive success. It was hilarious, gruesome, and an absolute joy to play, setting the stage for Bethesda to launch two critically acclaimed Wolfenstein and Doom reboots within a span of two years. Later, MachineGames produced “Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus,” which was even more well-received and set up a third game quite neatly.
After the initial releases, spin-offs like the less popular “Wolfenstein: Youngbloods” emerged, yet fans remained optimistic about a third installment to complete BJ’s tale. Regrettably, MachineGames found themselves working on “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” instead, a project they dedicated several years to. Upon its release, it received widespread acclaim from both critics and fans. Now, with an Indiana Jones sequel seemingly imminent, fans are left pondering if Wolfenstein 3 will ever materialize.
Wolfenstein 3 Has Always Been Part of MachineGames’ Vision for the Series
In a recent documentary on MachineGames, the YouTube channel Noclip interviewed several members of the studio about their work on the Wolfenstein series. At the end of the video, it was hinted that there is more to come in the Wolfenstein series. Studio head and game director Jens Gustafsson revealed that they initially planned the Wolfenstein games as a trilogy and had a clear idea of BJ’s final story arc. Because of this, they are determined to complete and release Wolfenstein 3.
During BJ’s initial weeks at ID while we were outlining ‘New Order’, we already had a plan for his character in the second and third installments,” explained Gustafsson. “I believe it’s worth mentioning that our work on Wolfenstein isn’t over; we have more of the story to share.
It’s anyone’s assumption as to when Wolfenstein 3 might be released, given the growth of MachineGames over time. Fans have longed for its creation and there’s hope it could happen. If enough resources are available, an Indiana Jones sequel and Wolfenstein 3 could potentially be developed at the same time. However, it’s uncertain if that will occur. It seems rather unlikely that two Indiana Jones games would emerge before the completion of the Wolfenstein trilogy, so it appears probable that if it does happen, Wolfenstein 3 might be MachineGames’ next project. Additionally, a Wolfenstein TV series is in development at Amazon, which suggests that a new game could accompany its release, though this is merely speculation.
