In a nutshell, Spider-Man may have his fair share of romantic turbulence, but none can compare to Daredevil’s heartbreaks within the Marvel Comics realm. It appears that Matt Murdock, who becomes Daredevil, frequently encounters tragic endings in his love life. His personal and professional commitments as Daredevil often lead to the women he cares about either departing or perishing due to his unstable personal life. He struggles to maintain open relationships without revealing his true identity, and those he does reveal it to have either deceived him or met unfortunate ends because they were aware of his double life. This unfortunate string of events makes Daredevil the most hard-luck lover in the Marvel Comics universe, and it seems that his love life hasn’t improved since its rocky beginnings over four decades ago.
Explore some of the heartbreaking love stories involving the Marvel superhero, Daredevil, ranging from those he lost tragically as his partners to those who deceived or caused him great pain. Here’s a glimpse into the saddest romantic relationships in Daredevil’s life.
10) Kirsten McDuffie
Kirsten McDuffie finds herself at the lower end of the list due to her relationship with Matt Murdock not involving any tragic or heart-wrenching events for her. As the assistant district attorney, she was privy to Matt’s secret identity as Daredevil, a fact he continuously denied to her. After Matt’s identity was unveiled, both Daredevil and Kirsten relocated to San Francisco and established a law firm together, deepening their romantic bond. However, when the Purple Children made the world forget that Matt was Daredevil, he exploited this memory loss as a reason to end things with Kirsten, returning to Hell’s Kitchen. Regardless of the split, she reemerged to offer assistance when Daredevil was arrested for murder, and the duo has managed to maintain a friendly rapport ever since.
9) Glorianna O’Breen
Glorianna O’Brien was once in a relationship with Matt Murdock, but she wasn’t particularly captivating due to her frequent portrayal as a damsel in distress in Marvel Comics. Unfortunately, this meant that Daredevil often had to rescue her from peril. However, their relationship was strained because of Matt’s constant deception and disappearing acts when he assumed the role of Daredevil. Despite her professed love for him, she eventually left Matt due to these issues. Later on, Glorianna began dating Foggy Nelson. Tragically, Victor Krueller, an adversary seeking revenge on those who testified against him in a case involving Wilson Fisk’s attempted murder, ultimately took her life. Glorianna is one of several Daredevil love interests who met a tragic end, but this occurred after the termination of their relationship.
8) Black Widow
Throughout Daredevil’s life, he has had romantic connections with some superheroes, one of the most significant being Black Widow. Over time, they developed a strong bond in their comic book adventures, and eventually, their relationship transformed into both a romantic partnership and a collaborative alliance in crime-fighting. However, as is often the case with complex characters like these, they eventually parted ways amicably without any lingering resentment. Interestingly, Black Widow has stood by Matt more than anyone else apart from Elektra. She was even ready to assist his future girlfriends and his former wife when he needed someone dependable.
In essence, Daredevil and Black Widow share a unique bond that transcends the typical hero-villain dynamic, making them reliable allies in more ways than one.
7) Echo
In essence, Echo and Daredevil shared a bond reminiscent of his connection with Elektra. Kingpin had molded Echo into an assassin, ordering her to harm Matt Murdock. Yet, amidst this turmoil, love blossomed between them, unbeknownst to either party. However, as their identities were gradually revealed during a confrontation, Daredevil enlightened Echo about Kingpin’s true nature and his sinister capabilities. This revelation prompted Echo to renounce Kingpin and adopt a heroic path similar to Matt’s. Nevertheless, due to their conflicting roles as vigilantes, they eventually ended their romantic relationship, but continued to maintain friendship.
6) Nyla Skin
In 2025, Nyla Skin re-entered Matt Murdock’s life, marking a second romantic encounter between the two. Previously, they had been quite a formidable couple, despite the fact that when they initially met, Nyla was a burglar and Matt suffered from amnesia, believing himself to be Jack. Upon regaining his memory, Matt decided to leave Nyla to protect her from his dangerous lifestyle. However, this year saw Nyla’s return in Marvel Comics, and the two resumed their relationship. Yet, their reunion was short-lived as Nyla ended it due to Matt’s frequent disappearances and deceptions. Acknowledging that he couldn’t reveal his secret to her, they mutually decided to remain friends rather than lovers.
5) Heather Glenn
In the course of their romantic relationship, Heather Glenn remained unaware that Matt Murdock was Daredevil. However, this secret ultimately led to the demise of their bond. When Daredevil apprehended Heather’s father and sent him to prison, he later found out that the villain known as the Purple Man had been manipulating him. Unfortunately, before he could secure his release, Heather’s dad took his own life while incarcerated. Upon discovering Matt in costume, Heather recognized who he was. After being told about her father’s death, she ended the relationship immediately and demanded that he stay away from her. Their relationship experienced several ups and downs, but eventually, Heather spiraled into self-destructive behavior, leading to alcoholism. In the end, Matt received repeated calls from Heather, but ultimately decided to part ways permanently. Tragically, Heather was found dead by suicide in her home, with Matt and Foggy discovering her lifeless body.
4) Elektra
Without much difficulty, it’s apparent that Daredevil’s most poisonous relationship is with Elektra. Initially, they were adversaries; Elektra was a hired gun, while Daredevil was a masked crime fighter. Over time, they transitioned into uneasy allies and eventually found themselves in love. However, this romance turned sour when Bullseye entered the scene, killing Elektra before Daredevil could intervene. Later, Elektra was brought back to life by The Hand. Their relationship has been turbulent, with periods of reconciliation followed by estrangement. In recent comics, Elektra acts as a secondary Daredevil, working alongside Matt when needed. Although Matt yearns for more from her than they currently share, she maintains a distance to keep their bond purely professional, focusing on joint combat endeavors.
3) Typhoid Mary
In hindsight, my biggest disappointment as a critic following Daredevil’s romantic entanglements was his involvement with Typhoid Mary – a choice that, even disregarding her status as a supervillain and Kingpin’s right-hand assassin, proved disastrous. Her instability is well documented, and engaging in a relationship with such a volatile individual could only spell trouble for both parties over time.
With multiple personalities prone to violence, it was evident that Mary posed an inherent danger to Daredevil’s safety, yet he persisted. Their relationship mirrored the toxic dynamics between Mary and Kingpin, suggesting that Daredevil may have been blind to the harmful consequences of his affection for one of her personas.
By getting involved with Mary, he inadvertently perpetuated her suffering instead of offering solace. This ill-fated romance was every bit as damaging as any association with Kingpin, and it seems that Daredevil’s wisdom failed him when it came to recognizing the potential harm in his actions.
2) Milla Donovan
Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil, has had relationships with several women throughout his life, but he’s only been married once. His wife was Milla Donovan, a blind woman from Hell’s Kitchen who dedicated her life to making the area better. Their relationship began after Daredevil saved her life, and she later found out that Matt and Daredevil were one and the same. The revelation made him fall for her so deeply that he couldn’t hide his identity any longer, leading them to fall in love and get married. However, this happiness was short-lived as Matt was imprisoned alongside Kingpin, and Foggy Nelson appeared to be killed. These events proved too overwhelming for Milla, who eventually lost grip on her mental health. In a fit of rage, she accidentally took someone’s life and was subsequently institutionalized. The court ordered Matt to stay away from Milla due to his supposed role in causing her psychological issues.
1) Karen Page
In the world of Daredevil, one relationship that proved particularly lethal was the one between him and his deepest love, Karen Page. For viewers familiar with her from the Netflix and now Disney+ series, it might come as a shock to learn about her descent in the comics prior to her demise. Struggling with addiction, Karen ultimately betrayed Daredevil by revealing his secret identity for drugs, information that was later exploited by Kingpin to ruin Matt Murdock’s life. The devastation wrought by Karen extended as far as putting Matt’s own mother’s life at risk; the unfortunate church where she serves as a nun became a battleground when Bullseye made an attempt on Matt’s life, only for Karen to step in and sacrifice herself, meeting her end in Daredevil’s arms – a tragic occurrence that has been all too common throughout his tumultuous existence.
