PS6 Will Feature a Detachable Disc Drive – Rumour

There’s been a lot of chatter about what Sony’s next-generation console (often called the PlayStation 6) might offer. A fresh report by Insider Gaming suggests that Sony may lean even more towards digital content by making the disc drive removable. The new system could potentially mimic the detachable disc drive found in more recent PS5 models.

According to Insider Gaming’s sources, it appears that Sony may offer two options for the PS6: a digital-only version of the console and a traditional one with a detachable disc drive. Customers who opt for the digital-only version might have the opportunity to purchase the disc drive separately if they choose to upgrade at a later time. The report suggests that Sony is determined to offer this choice, given the success of the PS5.

Regarding the removability of the disk drive, the company’s choice is influenced significantly by factors like production and transportation expenses, taking into account our current economic uncertainties. This suggests that the U.S. import tariffs could potentially have been a significant factor in the company’s decision-making process.

Although Sony hasn’t officially disclosed specifics about its upcoming next-gen console, recent reports dating back to late August suggest that the home console will debut alongside a portable device reminiscent of Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2. This handheld device may dock, allowing for an increase in power when connected, potentially due to additional wattage and improved cooling technology within the docking station. When docked, games are expected to run at a higher resolution.

The same report suggests that the device will be powered by an AMD chip, featuring 16 RDNA 5 compute units clocked at 1.20 GHz in portable mode and 1.65 GHz when docked. This details are said to have been obtained from recent AMD documentation.

According to recent reports, the upcoming PlayStation 6 handheld is anticipated to offer competitive pricing, potentially making it more budget-friendly than the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, which Asus is developing in partnership with Microsoft. This affordability might be facilitated by Sony opting to handle the research and development for their console internally, rather than outsourcing it to an external partner like Asus. The estimated price range for the handheld PS6 is around $399 to $499. Additionally, a smaller model, the PS6S, is expected to be released with a lower price point of between $299 and $399. Lastly, the full-sized PlayStation 6 home console is projected to retail at prices ranging from $549 to $699.

The PS6’s graphics processor is anticipated to deliver performance similar to AMD’s top-tier Radeon RX 9070 XT, featuring support for advanced technologies like Dense Geometry Format and Streaming Wave Coalescer, enabling flexible program execution. Conversely, the upcoming Xbox console’s chip is speculated to match the performance of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5080.
