Over the past ten years or so, there has been a significant shift towards digital games. Although digital games were available on Xbox 360 and PS3, they took time to download due to slower internet speeds and occupied a large portion of your console’s storage. Moreover, you often had to wait weeks or months for a game to be available for download. It wasn’t the most convenient method back then, but now, many prefer to acquire games digitally.

Consequently, Sony introduced both a standard and a disc-free model of the PS5 at launch. This move allowed them to offer a more affordable console variant, providing customers with options. Later on, PlayStation started selling the disc drive as a separate accessory, granting digital-only buyers the chance to utilize discs on their console. Despite concerns that the shift towards digital gaming could signal the final breath of physical games, Insider Gaming reports that the PS6 will offer an optional disc drive. Initially, this feature can be purchased separately, providing flexibility for users who wish to buy a digital-only console initially but upgrade later. For those preferring traditional game disks, there will also be a version of the PS6 that includes a disc drive by default. The goal is to balance cost reduction for Sony while accommodating diverse user preferences.

From a thrilled fan’s perspective, it appears that the upcoming PS6 is shaping up to be remarkably versatile, with whispers of a feature reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch’s docking system. If the rumors are true, the PS6 will hit the market simultaneously with a handheld device surpassing the power of a PS5. However, it’s expected that this portable version will be less powerful than the console itself. In essence, the PS6 seems poised to offer a wide array of play styles. It’s rumored that this handheld device may be available for purchase separately and function as an extension to the main console, thus allowing players to tailor their gaming experience with the new system.

For about seven to eight years, console generations have included disc drives. However, considering this might be the final generation that does, it’s possible we are moving towards a phase where disc drives are no longer necessary. The PS6 is said to release in 2027, which could make discs obsolete by the mid-2030s if people continue to shift away from them.

Many large retailers have either stopped selling them altogether or significantly decreased their inventory of physical video games. Instead, many companies are offering only partial games on the disc or cartridge, encouraging consumers to buy digitally for pre-loading and sometimes even early access as a pre-order bonus.
