Microsoft rolls out AI actions in File Explorer to more Insiders on Windows 11 as Canary Channel continues to play catch up

Microsoft recently released a new Windows 11 preview build, numbered 27938, for testers using the Canary Channel. This update incorporates additional features and alterations that were initially exclusive to the Beta and Dev Channels of the Windows Insider program. Testers can download this fresh version via Windows Update immediately!

Straight from the start, today’s update introduces a fresh AI actions feature in File Explorer, enabling Windows 11 to display tasks related actions directly within the File Explorer app using Click To Do as a quick initiation method.

Currently, we offer primarily image-based actions, however, we’re planning to introduce additional file actions in the future. With the present version, you can make use of the following functionalities.

  • Bing Visual Search:Ā Allows you to search the web using an image instead of text. Find similar images and products, get details about sites using the image, and identify landmarks, plants, and famous faces. From searching what you see on your screen, to shopping your preferred style, getting help with that homework problem, or translating text, getting answers is more intuitive than ever.
  • Blur Background:Ā Opens the Photos app which automatically finds the background in the photo, and with a single click, instantly highlights your subject and blurs out the background. You can also customize the effect by adjusting theĀ Blur IntensityĀ or use theĀ Brush ToolĀ to modify the areas being blurred.
  • Erase Objects:Ā With Photos by selecting or highlighting an unwanted element in your photo and Generative Erase makes it disappear.Ā  It allows you to fix and remove distractions from your photos.
  • Remove Background:Ā With Paint allows you to alter any image automatically in just one click leaving a smooth cutout of the subject. Background removal can detect the subject from the entire canvas or using the selection tool.

Microsoft is also enhancing the Taskbar by introducing a new feature for the Calendar flyout – displaying a larger clock with seconds. This was previously offered on Windows 10, and it has been reintroduced for Windows 11 users in the Canary Channel.

As a tech-savvy individual, I’m thrilled about Microsoft’s latest move: they’re creating a dedicated privacy section within the Windows Settings app for managing text and image generation requests from various apps. This feature will allow me to effortlessly keep track of which applications have recently sought access to leverage generative AI or system-wide actions.

As per usual, there are also a number of fixes as part of today’s build.

    • Fixed the issue causing the ā€œReset this PCā€ option under Settings > System > Recovery to not work on Build 27934.

Microsoft has started trialing a fresh development branch with Insiders in the Canary Channel. The branch shifted from rs_prerelease to br_release, which typically occurs close to when the firm prepares to split a platform update. This suggests that the forthcoming platform update is almost ready for final approval, although it doesn’t necessarily mean the company plans to release it to the public.

As an analyst, I can confirm that the upcoming Windows 11 release, version 25H2, will be built upon the existing platform release, known as Windows 11 version 24H2 (codenamed Germanium). This implies that both versions 25H2 and 24H2 will utilize the same servicing pipeline and offer identical feature sets. Notably, this announcement is independent of the recent transition of the Canary Channel to br_release.
