There’s a consistent admiration shared by Batman and Superman. The Man of Steel uses his extraordinary abilities for good, illuminating the world. Yet, he acknowledges that there must be someone who operates in the shadows, dealing with the criminal underbelly. This contrast in their methods makes DC Comics frequently team them up. Across numerous comics, TV series, and films, you’ll find Batman and Superman banding together to combat shared issues. Yet, it wouldn’t be as engaging if they always agreed. A degree of disagreement is essential, and fortunately for DC, its two most prominent heroes never shy away from a disagreement.
In the DC Extended Universe, the intensity of a possible confrontation between Batman and Superman is so high that they clash almost right away, with Ben Affleck’s Batman facing off against Henry Cavill’s Superman. However, in James Gunn’s DC Universe, they won’t follow this path, instead choosing to revisit Superman’s story by having him team up again with Lex Luthor in “Man of Tomorrow”. Although Batman may not engage directly with Superman, he will find himself entangled in the fray, but not traditionally so.
Batman and Superman Will Duke It Out at the Box Office in 2027
As a diehard fan, I must say, amidst the ever-growing sea of streaming platforms and escalating costs for movie tickets and snacks, it’s truly impressive that Superman managed to rake in an astounding $600 million at the box office. The film’s reviews are equally noteworthy, earning praise from both critics and fellow fans for its compelling narrative and outstanding performances. Needless to say, when it comes to all things Superman, Gunn’s voice carries significant weight, given his role as a key player at DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. And judging by his frequent social media posts, he’s clearly proud of what he’s accomplished. In fact, he’s already been talking up the sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which is currently undergoing final script revisions. This allows him to set an earlier-than-anticipated release date of July 9, 2027.
For 2027, the lineup of superhero movies is already impressive, with Sony wrapping up Miles Morales’ story in “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” and Marvel Studios aiming high with “Avengers: Secret Wars”. However, the excitement for these films might not compare to that of “The Batman Part II”, set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027, following several delays. The anticipation for director Matt Reeves’ next superhero film has been growing steadily for five years, but it could dwindle if “Man of Tomorrow” outshines it at the box office. There’s even speculation that Gunn might encourage Robert Pattinson to retire his Batman costume in favor of a more adaptable portrayal of the character.
The DCU’s Batman Is Coming, Whether Matt Reeves Is Ready or Not
Under Gunn’s leadership at DC Studios, he’s been consistently supportive of Reeves and his DC universe. The filmmaker values diversity in storytelling within the DC Universe, but this might change if Superman and his crew achieve greater accomplishments. It’s likely that there will be a strong desire to incorporate other DC characters into the cinematic world, like John Stewart and Wonder Woman who are currently working on their projects. The upcoming solo movie for Batman adds another layer of complexity since Reeves’ interpretation remains in play.
Managing two distinct portrayals of a single character is no walk in the park; it’s bound to lead to confusion, especially when both series aim to use the same antagonists. A potential solution could be to compare how DCU and whatever Reeves develops handle these villains. This way, fans can express their preferences through their purchases, simplifying the challenging discussions taking place behind the scenes.
