Fans of the Demon Slayer Corps are eagerly awaiting the release of “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” in North American theaters on September 12th. This upcoming movie marks the start of the finale trilogy for this shonen series, and both characters and voice actors involved can’t help but feel excited. We had a chance to speak with Zach Aguilar and Johnny Yong Bosch, who lend their voices to Tanjiro and Giyu respectively, about more than just saying goodbye to Demon Slayer – they’ll be revisiting these roles one more time.
Johnny Yong Bosch, known for his extensive work in anime, has voiced prominent characters like Vash the Stampede from Trigun, Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach, Dante from Devil May Cry, and Broly from Dragon Ball Super. With such a vast repertoire, it’s clear that when he says goodbye to a character, as with Giyu in Demon Slayer, the sentiment isn’t merely professional – it’s personal. In his own words, “I’ve been eagerly awaiting this film for Giyu to reach this point for quite some time now. Being here feels amazing, but then I realize that, oh wow, we’re nearing the end. My daughter actually got the manga after I saw a spoiler. So, I was just doing some research on the character and trying to understand his essence. As I dug deeper, I ended up getting her the manga set and reading through it together.
Conversely, Zach Aguilar, the voice actor of Tanjiro from Demon Slayer, felt a mix of emotions as he said goodbye to the shonen series. “In truth,” he explained, “as a fan of the story and manga, it’s been wonderful to witness its adaptation. The sentiment that comes to mind for me is bittersweet.
Researching the Demon Slayer Manga
As a die-hard fan of Demon Slayer, I must confess that immersing myself in the manga is both thrilling and challenging! The most difficult aspect I’ve found is striking a balance between staying true to the source material and allowing my performance to breathe on its own. Some actors choose to avoid reading the original work to focus entirely on the present moment of their character. However, I can understand why they might hesitate – if you visualize every scene in exact detail as you read it, there’s a risk that your lines during dubbing may subtly differ. That’s the fine line actors tread when they are truly invested in their craft. You want to remain open and spontaneous, avoiding over-preparation for your big-screen portrayal.
Zach delved deeper into the concept that the film trilogy marked Tanjiro’s farewell, and how this influenced his portrayal: “I knew it was a big final battle. When I entered the recording booth, I felt I needed to be fully present, ready to follow direction, trust the director, and let myself be guided. I believe this is some of my finest work as Tanjiro, and I’m incredibly pleased with the results.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle arrives in theaters on September 12th.
