The upcoming HBO series based on Harry Potter will deviate from both the books and films due to adaptation requirements. With a longer format, it can incorporate elements not featured in the movies, while elaborating on book events and characters. The new Harry Potter production is expected to introduce several characters absent in the films, such as Charlie Weasley (though he might not appear in Season 1), Professor Binns (portrayed by Richard Durden), and Peeves (who hasn’t been cast yet but is anticipated to make an appearance during the first season).
The modifications in the Harry Potter movies are intriguing and essential for a more accurate adaptation. However, they also seem to incorporate some changes from the books as well. The television series has already cast significant roles such as Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge. These characters play crucial roles – Lucius Malfoy is Draco’s father and a Death Eater, while Cornelius Fudge is the Minister of Magic. Interestingly, neither character appears in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” It’s possible that they were announced early and won’t appear until Season 2, but this goes against every other casting announcement so far, making it seem unnecessary.
How Lucius Malfoy & Cornelius Fudge Could Fit Into Harry Potter Season 1
If Lucius Malfoy and Cornelius Fudge are characters in Season 1, what possible roles could they have based on the books? The films did not make these changes, but the novels offer some hints about their potential inclusion. Both characters are introduced in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, with Draco making comments about his father that provide a glimpse into his character before he appears, as well as suggesting the power he might wield. Additionally, we learn from Hagrid that Fudge frequently sends owls to Dumbledore each morning, seeking advice.
One potential method for introducing Lucius early on would be by having him show up with Draco in Diagon Alley, a place where Harry initially meets the boy who later becomes his adversary. Since Lucius is present with Draco at the Diagon Alley in “The Chamber of Secrets”, it’s feasible that he could make an appearance there. However, his first encounter with Harry and the Weasleys is quite significant, so it might be unfortunate to omit it. An option to consider would be including a separate scene featuring just the Malfoys. Alternatively, Lucius may appear during a Board of Governors meeting at Hogwarts, offering an opportunity to depict him trying to assert his influence to achieve his objectives.
It’s also plausible that Lucius’ scenes might feature Fudge as well. Given their shared interest in political matters and Malfoy’s attempts to influence the Ministry, we may witness a scene depicting some of this, possibly with Dumbledore included too. It’s possible that Fudge’s presence could lead to interactions with the Hogwarts Headmaster, either seeking his counsel or discussing the Philosopher’s Stone and potential theft threats. Including such a scene early on could help establish their relationship, which would later contrast significantly when Fudge disregards reason about Lord Voldemort’s return. This could make for an intriguing portrayal of their evolving bond.
Despite Lucius and Fudge possibly featuring in the initial season of the Harry Potter reboot, they’re expected to have limited screen time or significant roles. Instead, it seems that the show will expand upon these characters, providing additional opportunities for character depth and world-building. This isn’t necessarily a negative aspect, as it allows the remake to distinguish itself not just from the films, but also the books, ensuring a unique interpretation of the story is being presented.
The Harry Potter remake is expected to be released on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.
