3 Cartoon Network Shows That Will Never Get Rebooted (Because They’re Perfect)

The show introduced viewers to one of the first prominent cartoon himbos.

Johnny Bravo is a character known for his pursuit of women, despite being the son of a mother he adores, and consistently getting rejected by the ladies in amusing, exaggerated ways. This pattern of failure in romance is a key aspect of the humor. Replicating this show in today’s context might be challenging, as it relies heavily on traditional gender roles and slapstick comedy that may not resonate as strongly in a more progressive era. Even Cartoon Network attempted to produce episodes without its original creator, but the results were lackluster until the creator returned for a fourth season, which ultimately was well-received (alongside a movie special in India). Attempting to recreate Johnny Bravo today seems difficult no matter how much effort is put into it.

2.) Dexter’s Laboratory

Regarding the pioneering Cartoon Cartoons, I must say that among them, Dexter’s Laboratory was the first original creation to air on Cartoon Network. However, this series stands out a bit from the rest in that it underwent a significant transformation even during its initial broadcast. After the first two seasons, which were overseen by the original creator Genndy Tartakovsky, Dexter’s Laboratory returned for two more seasons with an entirely new creative and production team. It was through these later episodes that the franchise demonstrated its resistance to being rebooted.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the golden days of Dexter’s Laboratory. Oh, the nostalgia! Fans like me have often wished for its return, but Genndy Tartakovsky himself has shown no signs of stepping back into the lab anytime soon. The first two seasons wrapped up so beautifully, weaving together all the storylines from each episode in a way that left us satisfied and yearning for more. Alas, it seems the franchise couldn’t recapture that magic without the original creator’s spark. Yet, those magnificent first two seasons continue to shine as brightly today as they did back then.

1.) Ed, Edd n Eddy

Speaking of Cartoon Network shows that truly shone during their time and whose creators wouldn’t entertain a reboot, Ed, Edd n Eddy stands out as the most remarkable example. Crafted by Danny Antonucci, Ed, Edd n Eddy offered something distinctly unique to viewers. This series centered around three friends who were always hatching schemes to swindle their neighborhood peers, making it one of the few Cartoon Network franchises that received a flawless ending. The original TV series exhaustively explored these characters, and to add to the magic, there was even a grand movie event to mark its conclusion.

Antonucci has openly expressed his belief that a remake of Ed, Edd n Eddy would not succeed well, as the only feasible approach seems to be making them grow up. However, he acknowledged that it would still rehash old themes. The original series was distinctive and brimming with innovative concepts, a creative fire difficult to recapture in quite the same way. It offers fulfillment from start to finish, and unfortunately, Cartoon Network may never be able to recreate its genuine energy again, particularly given the contemporary animation environment that tends to rework older ideas.
