3 Biggest Takeaways from Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo’s Debut (With #2 Changing Its Genre Completely)

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo manga!

Last year, the main plot of Jujutsu Kaisen came to an end, but Gege Akutami’s intricate world still has plenty left to discover. The follow-up to the original tale, titled Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, was unveiled in the September 7th, 2025 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. As per Akutami, this spin-off manga will likely carry on for at least half a year, focusing on new adventures and characters. The sequel also delves deeper into the descendants of Yuta Okkotsu, offering more insight that was hinted at in the original’s epilogue.

The narrative unfolds in the year 2086, a time when the danger posed by spectral curses and curse casters remains significant, 68 years since the Culling Game. The sequel principally revolves around Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu, descendants of Yuta and Maki. They encounter Maru, an abbreviation for Marulu Val Vol Yelvori, an extraterrestrial being who collaborates with Jujutsu sorcerers as an investigator, dealing with a case involving missing children. Despite the story’s early stages, it has already touched upon several key plot points and established its premise quite impressively.

3) Japan Doesn’t Seem to Have Had a Major Incident After the Sukuna Raid

In the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen, tranquility was never its strong suit, but events took a turn for the worse once Yuji Itadori consumed Ryomen Sukuna’s finger and became his vessel. Matters worsened further with Kenjaku, an ancient figure who had been lurking in the background for centuries, accelerating his scheme following Yuji’s transformation into a vessel. This escalation led to the appearance of potent special-grade curses, culminating in the Shibuya Incident – just the start of a long-lasting nightmare.

The turmoil persisted throughout the Culling Game Arc until it culminated with the demises of Sukuna and Kenjaku. Despite this, the curse cycle remained unbroken, claiming more innocent lives at the hands of supernatural beings. But the past 68 years had been remarkably peaceful compared to the main narrative. Regrettably, that tranquility is about to be shattered with the arrival of extraterrestrials, who present a significant danger to Japan.

2) Japan Has Been Invaded by 50,000 Aliens

In the sequel, what truly stands out is the introduction of an extraterrestrial species, the Simurians, who find a surprising resemblance in a select group of individuals from Japan – the Jujutsu sorcerers. Interestingly, these sorcerers share powers similar to those possessed by the Simurians, but their numbers are scarce and insufficient to manage all the nation’s threats. This unique ability has sparked the curiosity of the Simurians, leading to an invasion of approximately 50,000 them seeking refuge in Japan.

In this story, the characters decided to focus on Japan because that’s where the abilities of Jujutsu sorcerers are confined, unlike elsewhere. This event has been classified as a unique-tier incident, comparable to Sukuna’s assault during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc. The main character, Maru, is secretly collaborating with the sorcerers to explore the possibility of peaceful coexistence. However, when the mission took an unexpected turn, he inadvertently exposed his true identity to Yuka and Tsurugi by unintentionally activating his third eye.

Regarding Maru’s character, it should be easy for him to fit in with the others. Yet, the main challenge seems to stem from the other invaders, particularly his supposed twin brother, who doesn’t seem to harbor good intentions. Moreover, there’s an intriguing detail about someone resembling Master Tengen being seen next to the Simurian. This is a point that the sequel should clarify.

1) Yuka and Tsurugi Are Parallels of Their Grandparents

Yuta shares a namesake with her grandfather Yuta Okkotsu and carries on his legacy by wearing both his ring and the same attire. Meanwhile, Tsurugi bears a striking resemblance to Maki, as they both possess a Heavenly Restricted Body and a minimal amount of Cursed Energy, enabling them to perform New Shadow Style. Unlike Maki, who has her own unique Cursed Technique, Tsurugi is devoting himself to honing his physical abilities in order to grow stronger. After confiscating Yuta’s ring from Yuko due to their assessment of him as weak, they imposed a special-grade protective charm upon him for safety.

Tsurugi was dealt a severe setback, prompting him to vow he’d grow stronger and retrieve the ring for his sister. His resolve to demonstrate his worth shares striking similarities with Maki’s. Notably, as per translator @lightningclare on X, Yuka’s name shares the same characters as Yuta’s. Interestingly, Tsurugi’s name signifies seriousness, but it uses the same characters as Maki and Mai’s.
