Ironheart: How Will Riri Continue Stark’s Legacy?

In my perspective as an ardent admirer, Dominique Thorne’s character, Riri Williams, embarked on her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) voyage as a brilliant MIT student with an affinity for technology. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she attracted unwanted attention from the Wakandans due to her actions. In the film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” this 19-year-old rising star finds herself at the heart of a global crisis. This is largely due to her newest creation – a device capable of detecting vibranium, a highly valuable metal that Wakanda is known to control and be the only known source of on Earth. As society understands, Wakanda possesses the world’s largest and, as far as we know, singular supply of this precious metal.

However, it was revealed in the sequel to Black Panther, that the Gulf of Mexico is abundant with this material. The underwater Mutant ruler (also seen in Avengers: Doomsday, Namor) has constructed his entire kingdom, Talokan, beneath the waves, using Vibranium. Similar to Wakanda, Talokan surpasses the scientific boundaries of any other earthly nation. After a kidnapping incident, rescue mission, and one regicide, Riri gets involved in the conflict with Namor, donning an Iron Man-like suit of power armor, crafted from Wakandan technology.

Towards the end of the movie, Riri is required to give her recently acquired armor to her new Wakandan friend Shuri, in order to keep it out of harmful possession. It’s here that we encounter Riri as the main character in Ironheart.

In an effort to recapture the success she experienced in Wakanda, she’s become extremely determined in her home city of Chicago. This determination sometimes pushes her towards questionable allies.

Let’s consider instead the individuals who preceded Riri Williams. For instance, Tony Stark, who developed an armored suit of his own creation even before Riri was old enough for diapers, and was one of the original Avengers, averting numerous catastrophic events throughout the world, culminating in sacrificing himself to safeguard reality from Thanos.

In contrast to claims that Riri in the MCU isn’t the new Iron Man, the billionaire superhero left behind a massive legacy, comparable to his inflated self-image. Significantly, in a recently released teaser for Ironheart, Miss Williams says a telling line: “I aim to carry on Stark’s legacy.

This is quite a challenge for the up-and-coming hero, Ironheart. At first glance, it appears that Ironheart starts with Riri being kicked out of MIT and losing her access to the cutting-edge labs and equipment on campus. However, if she’s anything like Tony Stark, she’ll come up with an ingenious way to overcome these obstacles.

In the marketing campaign for the series, viewers have already witnessed Riri turning down a perilous challenge posed by antagonist Parker Robbins. Instead, she employed her intelligence and items within reach to ingeniously conceive and build her own unconventional solution.

This recalls instances where Tony Stark found himself in difficult situations yet managed to triumph through his cleverness. For example, the time when terrorists forced him into a cave and he constructed his first Iron Man suit to flee, or when he infiltrated Aldrich Killian’s compound using homemade weapons sourced from Home Depot.

Above all, what Tony bequeathed was his heroic spirit – a trait that consistently led him to risk his life for others’ safety. Despite straining personal connections and developing fixations in pursuit of this role, Tony remained true to the distinctive traits and idiosyncrasies that defined him as Tony Stark.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Riri might not have to face the kind of sacrifices that are typical for characters in the franchise, given her roots as a kid from Chicago. However, she is exceptionally intelligent, determined beyond measure, and relentless about improving her armor. These characteristics resonate strongly with Tony Stark. Notably, Riri’s Ironheart suit appears to be heavily influenced by Iron Man’s design.

In a different promotional material for Ironheart (provided by Marvel Studios on X), executive producer Ryan Coogler stated that “It’s true, many individuals wear the suit,” as images of Iron Man, War Machine, Spider-Man, and Pepper Potts as Rescue appeared. “This young scientist,” Coogler added, “boasts an exceptional level of intelligence.

She’ll face a challenging situation when she meets Parker Robbins and his cloak steeped in ominous magic, possibly even coming across Mephisto, a powerful figure from Marvel’s netherworld.

Regarding Tony Stark, who tragically passed away in 2019 during “Avengers: Endgame,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is preserving his memory through various means, apart from Riri Williams’ escapades. For instance, even though Val altered Avengers Tower significantly after purchasing it, she preserved Tony’s bar. Additionally, in “Vision Quest,” the amnesiac synthezoid is rumored to meet a revived Ultron – a menacing AI creation of Tony’s that unintentionally caused genocide.

Marvel Television’s series “Ironheart” was released with the first three episodes on Disney+ on July 24th. The remaining three episodes will be aired on Tuesday, July 1st. In addition to the main character, “Ironheart” features Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, and Alden Eirenreich in its cast.

What Is Ironheart and Iron Man’s Relationship Like in the Comics?

In the Marvel Comics world, Riri Williams, introduced in Invincible Iron Man #3 (2016) by authors Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato, grew up admiring Iron Man and later took inspiration from him.

At fifteen, I find myself constructing a unique interpretation of Stark’s armor that manages to captivate the interest of the legendary inventor himself, Tony Stark. Impressed not only by my creation but also by my potential, both Tony and a holographic replica of him offer their encouragement and guidance as I strive to become the superhero known as Ironheart.

In the future, Williams creates a customized AI assistant named NATALIE, reminiscent of Natalie Washington, Riri’s dearest childhood friend who tragically lost her life in a drive-by shooting. By incorporating Washington’s appearance and character into her suit, Ironheart pays tribute to her cherished friend who is no longer with us.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), instead of relying on Tony Stark’s hologram (which is quite expensive with Robert Downey Jr.), Ironheart will develop her own unique AI named NATALIE. The stories of MCU’s Riri and comic book Riri might diverge in various ways, but the influence of Iron Man will continue to loom large.
