PlayStation Confirms It Won’t Copy a Big Game Pass Feature

It appears that PlayStation has chosen not to mimic the approach of Xbox Game Pass, signifying a potential softening of the long-standing competition between these two gaming giants. While Xbox has made strategic moves like placing key games on PlayStation platforms, such as “Gears of War,” PlayStation’s actions could be seen as less reciprocal unless you consider MLB The Show, which was more likely a decision by Major League Baseball than PlayStation itself. Despite their differences in strategies, both Xbox and PlayStation remain competitors, with Xbox focusing on expansion through streaming, native gameplay, and other means, while PlayStation continues to operate traditionally.

Microsoft significantly disrupted the gaming landscape during the last generation by launching Xbox Game Pass, a service resembling Netflix but offering hundreds of video games at no additional cost. The selection constantly updates with fresh titles, while all Xbox’s exclusive first-party games, such as Call of Duty, become accessible to subscribers on their release date. This bold move has sparked curiosity about how both Xbox and game developers are generating profits from this venture.

PlayStation recently launched their own library, the PlayStation Plus collection, which resembles Xbox Game Pass and offers a variety of excellent older games each month. This service is beneficial for players as it allows them to enjoy games on a budget, explore new titles, and catch up on games they might have previously missed. However, what sets PlayStation apart from others is that titles from PlayStation Studios are not accessible through the service on their release day. If you wish to play an upcoming game like “Death Stranding 2“, you’ll need to pay $70 for it, and it doesn’t seem like this policy will change in the near future.

PlayStation Won’t Put Any PS5 Exclusives on PS Plus On Day One

In a conversation with Game File, Nick Maguire, Vice President of Global Services at PlayStation, disclosed that they do not intend to make any of their games available on PlayStation Plus immediately upon or even shortly after their launch. Instead, PlayStation has been concentrating on independent games for which they can provide a platform and releasing these titles on the subscription service on their release date.

Maguire explained that we’ve consistently adhered to our overall plan. This means we’re not releasing games simultaneously with their initial launch elsewhere. Instead, our approach involves discovering around four to five independent titles available on the same day as their release, which we then use to bolster our strategy of offering games that are 12, 18 months old or more.

It took a while, but finally, a PS5 game was added to PlayStation Plus: God of War Ragnarok, which joined the service in early 2025, having been released on PS5 in November 2022. This suggests that PlayStation has confidence in its service even without major blockbusters like this one. Additionally, it’s likely that these games continue to sell well for months and sometimes years after their initial release, making it unnecessary to give them away en masse.
