In their latest Phase 6 production, Marvel Studios reintroduced a formidable, previously overlooked Eternals character. As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Phase 4, the film Eternals debuted a new team of cosmic heroes who secretly safeguarded Earth from behind the scenes without interfering with human history. Composed of near-immortal beings, this group of superheroes boasts an impressive range of abilities, including flight, energy manipulation, super speed, super strength, and extraordinary intellect. Among its members, Ikaris stands out as the most powerful, wielding enhanced strength, flight, and energy projection capabilities.
Although initially portrayed as an exemplary hero, Ikaris from Eternals unexpectedly turned out to be a traitor, loyal instead to their Celestial leader Arishem. The climax of Eternals demonstrated Ikaris’ guilt, culminating in his self-destructive flight into the sun, resulting in his death. However, the complexities of the Multiverse opened up potential for Ikaris’ reappearance in Marvel Zombies.
In the newest trailer for Marvel Zombies, we get a unique glimpse of the character Ikaris, who appears to be a zombie, engaging in combat with a similarly afflicted Captain Marvel. The solitary Eternal is noticeable at the 44-second mark of the preview.
In the Marvel Universe, Marvel Studios revived Ikaris during Phase 6 in the comic series “Marvel Zombies.” As for whether more Eternals will show up in the four-part animated series, that detail remains uncertain at this time.
In a new turn of events for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Ikaris – who met his demise at the conclusion of “Eternals” – is set to make a comeback in the storyline known as “Marvel Zombies”.
Under the direction of Bryan Andrews, Marvel Studios’ fourth R-rated project, titled “Marvel Zombies,” expands upon the story introduced in Episode 5 of “What If…?” This highly anticipated series boasts a stellar cast including Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop), Awkwafina (Katy), Florence Pugh (Yelena), and David Harbour (Red Guardian). The four episodes of “Marvel Zombies” are set to debut on Disney+ on September 24, 2025.

Why Ikaris’ Transformation Into a Zombie Has A Deeper Meaning
The Eternals have revealed that the primary team of heroes are nearly immortal artificial entities, distinct from humans. Yet, falling prey to the virus implies a predicament graver than many fans initially perceived.
The preview suggests a confrontation between Ikaris and Captain Marvel, two strong heroes. It’s thrilling to imagine them clashing at their best, but the fact that they appear to be fighting each other despite being affected by some virus might indicate that it’s engineered to make them target each other rather than attacking ordinary people.
This illustrates just how intricate the virus truly is, as even mighty figures such as Ikaris and Captain Marvel were not immune to its impact, demonstrating that nobody is exempt from its reach.
Instead of appearing as a mindless zombie, Ikaris might not be a zombie at all. Instead, he seems to be trying to protect the planet from further damage inflicted by Captain Marvel. However, it’s possible that the zombie virus influenced his artificial programming, leading him to cause destruction initially.
