For a long time, transforming video games into movies was seen as a fatal blow due to Hollywood’s difficulties in adapting player-driven narratives. Additionally, taking creative liberties with source material often provoked an onslaught of criticism. However, situations like Sonic’s initial design reveal that change doesn’t always lead to improvement but should not be immediately dismissed. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, for instance, taught this lesson when it handled criticism gracefully after casting Chris Pratt as the main character. Despite initial skepticism, the film became a blockbuster hit and a tribute to the beloved game franchise that has amused millions for years.
With a victory under their belts, Universal Pictures, Nintendo, and Illumination are ready to take another swing at success. They’re pulling out all the stops, with an impressive increase in the works. Here are seven essential elements that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie should incorporate from the game to avoid upsetting fans once more.
7) Melty Molten Galaxy
In the game Super Mario Galaxy, Bowser sets out on a quest to capture Princess Peach at any cost, even if it means journeying far from home. As for our hero, Mario, he must traverse various galaxies, gathering Power Stars that Bowser has swiped. One of his stops is the scorching Molten Melty Galaxy, filled with tricky and distinctive stages. Cranking up the heat on our protagonist promises an exhilarating experience, matching the thrill of his previous escapades.
6) Yoshi
During their space voyage in “Super Mario Galaxy”, Mario encounters several companions such as his brother Luigi, Toad, and even himself (in the form of Mario’s miniature version called “Mini-Mario”). However, another significant character from Nintendo is absent: Yoshi. Interestingly, a green egg that could potentially be Yoshi is present in the game, indicating that it falls upon the creators of “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” to fulfill its predecessor’s pledge and incorporate this important character originally seen in “Super Mario Galaxy 2”.
5) Rosalina
In the world of video games, Super Mario Galaxy introduced a significant new character – Rosalina, who safeguards the universe. When Bowser snatches the Power Stars from her Comet Observatory, she finds herself in need of assistance. For the movie adaptation of this game, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it’s crucial to include Rosalina, as her absence would make the story incomplete. To ensure an accurate representation, she should play a substantial role, necessitating a well-known voice actor for her portrayal.
4) Bowser Jr.
It’s unlikely that Bowser will succeed with his old tactics against Mario this time around, given that his plan fell apart in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”. A potential strategy for Bowser to tip the scales could involve integrating his son, Bowser Jr., into his schemes. In “Super Mario Galaxy 2”, this little monster has caused quite a stir for Mario and his father. Finding a talented child actor to bring Bowser Jr. to life would be great, but having Jack Black lend his voice as well would make it even more enjoyable.
3) Gusty Garden Galaxy
Among all the galaxies in Super Mario Galaxy, Gusty Garden stands out as the most immersive destination. The main appeal lies in its lush green landscapes, which teem with formidable enemies. Major Burrow, the boss of the galaxy, is one of the toughest adversaries you’ll encounter, but the music during his battle makes repeated defeats more bearable. A movie adaptation featuring Gusty Garden’s Big Band and its captivating soundtrack would be a clever idea.
2) Luma
In simpler terms, Rosilina shares her home on the Comet Observatory with fascinating beings called Lumas. Under specific circumstances, these creatures can morph into entire galaxies. These Lumas travel alongside Mario in the game “Super Mario Galaxy.” The upcoming movie should follow this pattern since Lumas are capable of speaking, eliminating any potential communication problems as we move forward.
1) Rainbow Mario
In other words, a Mario project isn’t complete without the addition of a new form for the character, and Super Mario Galaxy features several distinctive ones. Among these, Rainbow Mario is particularly noteworthy as it becomes active upon acquiring a Rainbow Star. This transformation grants Mario a powerful boost that enables him to swiftly defeat enemies. If Bowser isn’t cautious in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, he might find himself on the receiving end of a colorful attack barrage.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 3, 2026.
