For years, the Avengers have been the main team protecting the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing together Earth’s strongest heroes to tackle dangers too big for anyone to handle alone. They’ve earned a reputation for incredible victories, saving the world from aliens, dangerous AI, and powerful villains. However, alongside these wins, the Avengers have also faced setbacks. These failures often reveal the heroes’ weaknesses and test their teamwork, ultimately pushing them to improve and grow.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently divided, with two separate teams vying to be the next Avengers. One team, the New Avengers, was officially approved by the government and formed after the events of *Thunderbolts*. Meanwhile, Sam Wilson, also known as Captain America, is building a more independent team. This split will lead to a major crossover event called *Avengers: Doomsday*, where these two groups will have to work together to defeat the powerful Doctor Doom. But before facing this new threat, it’s worth remembering the tough losses the Avengers have experienced throughout their history in the MCU.
3) Thanos’ Wakanda Assault in Avengers: Infinity War
The fight to defend Wakanda in *Avengers: Infinity War* was a desperate and violent last stand. The remaining Avengers and Wakanda’s army fought bravely against Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his massive forces, but they were ultimately outmatched. Thanos sent an enormous wave of creatures, the Outriders, to overwhelm Wakanda, creating a distraction while he went after Vision (Paul Bettany) and the Mind Stone in his forehead. Despite Wakanda’s advanced technology and the heroes’ courage, the battle was lost from the beginning.
The most devastating part of this defeat wasn’t just that the heroes lost the battle, but how completely Thanos outsmarted them. While Captain America, Black Panther, and Thor were fighting on the ground, Thanos used that as a distraction to get to Vision and Wanda Maximoff. In a heartbreaking finale, he easily defeated even the most powerful heroes and even went back in time to take the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead, killing him. This complete victory allowed him to collect all the Infinity Stones and ultimately use them to wipe out half of all life in the universe.
2) Ultron’s Victory at Klaue’s Vibranium Hideout
In *Avengers: Age of Ultron*, the Avengers tracked down the dangerous AI Ultron (voiced by James Spader) to the scrapyard of Ulysses Klaue (played by Andy Serkis), a black market arms dealer. This encounter should have been a clear win for the heroes, who were a well-established and experienced team, and seemed more than capable of handling the newly created robot and his allies, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). However, the team’s arrogance and lack of preparation for a mental attack led to a shocking and deeply personal defeat, as they fell into a trap that exploited their minds rather than their physical strength.
The defeat was crushing. Wanda Maximoff overwhelmed each Avenger by making them relive their worst fears, trapping them in their own minds. This left them shattered and defenseless, enabling Ultron to steal the Vibranium he needed to build his most powerful form. This loss had devastating consequences, directly giving Ultron the means to carry out his plan for widespread destruction. The Avengers learned a harsh lesson: their biggest weaknesses weren’t external threats, but internal struggles that enemies could easily use against them.
1) Loki’s Escape from the Helicarrier
The fight on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier in *The Avengers* was the team’s biggest setback, and it happened because they couldn’t work together. Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, masterfully used the heroes’ pride, lack of trust, and existing disagreements to pit them against each other. Although Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), under Loki’s control, started the attack, the real problem was the tension that already existed. Loki’s teasing and manipulation made the conflicts between Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Thor explode, turning Earth’s strongest heroes into a group of arguing individuals.
The defeat was especially crushing because the Avengers were expected to win easily. They had Loki contained and a clear advantage, but constant infighting made them unable to work together. While they argued, Loki’s plan succeeded, destroying the Helicarrier’s engines, temporarily knocking out the Hulk, and tragically killing Agent Coulson. Loki’s escape felt like a final blow, a result of the Avengers’ inability to trust each other. The experience taught them a valuable lesson: their real power wasn’t in their individual abilities, but in their teamwork.
