What John Oliver Said That Got Bleeped During Emmys Acceptance Speech

John Oliver has no issues speaking his mind.

At the 2025 Emmy Awards on September 14th, John Oliver, while accepting the award for Outstanding Variety Series for *Last Week Tonight*, jokingly teased the show’s host, Nate Bargatze. Bargatze had playfully started reducing the amount of money donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America by deducting funds for every acceptance speech that went over 45 seconds.

John briefly thanked a few people, including his wife, Kate Norley, and their two sons. He then revealed the amount of money he was adding to the donation – money Nate had secured for brief speaking slots – by unexpectedly shouting swear words that CBS had to censor during the broadcast.

John jokingly said from stage, “You’re making a lot of money, Nate Bargatze!” He then added with a laugh, “And that’ll be a contribution to the swear jar.”

Everyone laughed at the incident, but it wasn’t the first time John’s comments had been censored on live TV. Last year, his speech was cut short during a touching moment.

John, accepting his award, jokingly thanked their dog. He explained that she was a wonderful companion, present at their wedding, and a huge support during the pandemic. She’d also been with them through both of their pregnancies.

As he started to get emotional, gentle music began to play, and he unexpectedly exclaimed-with a curse word edited out-that he felt like singer Sarah McLachlan in that moment.

After a lighthearted moment, John grew more serious. “We had to say goodbye to our wonderful dog,” he said, “and this isn’t just about her-it’s about all dogs. You’re all such good girls and boys, and you all deserve a treat! Now, let’s have some fun!”
