It’s been announced since September last year that the actor from Until I Kill You, Shaun Evans, will lead an upcoming ITV spy thriller. Now, more actors have been cast for this series called Betrayal.
The four-part series is being referred to as a “tense, fresh spy-thriller and love story unfolding in the enigmatic realm of MI5.” It has been revealed that Romola Garai from Vigil will headline the cast along with Evans.
Garai is particularly recognized for her recent appearances in BBC’s Vigil season 2, Netflix’s Scoop and Just Act Normal, along with prior leading parts in numerous television shows such as The Hour, A Fictional Account, and Becoming Elizabeth.
Without a doubt, Evans is primarily recognized for his notable performance and prolonged stint in ITV’s Endeavour. Additionally, he has appeared in other shows such as Vigil and most recently teamed up with Anna Maxwell Martin in Until I Kill You.

In the play Betrayal, Evans takes on the role of MI5 agent John Hughes, while Garai portrays John’s partner Claire, whose loyalty towards him becomes tested due to the mystery and pressures of his job, as suggested by the plot summary.
It’s understood that the show delves into the pressures faced by MI5 agents due to their demanding roles, as portrayed through John’s character, whose life is shaken by betrayal.
According to the official summary, “Betrayal” focuses on John Hughes, a mid-level MI5 agent dealing with a swiftly evolving security environment and his own internal struggles. When John’s covert meeting with a potential British-Iranian informant results in violence, he becomes a subject of investigation by figures like Simone Grant.
In the complex realm of spying, the tension on John’s marriage with his partner Claire escalates to a point where it becomes difficult to maintain.
The situation becomes even more intense as Mehreen Askari-Evans, a shrewd, driven agent from MI6, newly assigned here, threatens not only his professional reputation but also tests his ability to keep his emotions in check.
In addition to Evans and Garai, the ensemble also features Zahra Ahmadi from Beyond Paradise, portraying the character Mehreen who is a recent MI6 transfer, and Nikki Amuka-Bird, known for I, Jack Wright, playing John’s superior named Simone.
The remaining members of the Betrayal cast feature Gamba Cole from The Outlaws, Omid Djalili known for The Letter for the King, Matthew Tennyson recognized in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hayley Tamaddon famed in Unforgotten, Anthony Flanagan starring in Protection, Paddy Rowan from G’wed, Waj Ali of Out There, and Karim Kadjar who has acted in Wolf Hall.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Emma Cunniffe, Georgina Rylance, Ben Lambert, Julia Watson, and Julian Wadham have all been added to the cast. Alongside these seasoned talents, we welcome newcomers Elham Karimpour, Aidan Rivers, Corin Silva, and Eliza Agrosoaie to the project.
The series “Betrayal” doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but it is scheduled to air on our screens in 2026. Production for this series has begun in Manchester and Liverpool, with Julian Jarrold (A Very Royal Scandal) directing and Irma Inniss (Mr Loverman) serving as the producer.
