Stephen Colbert Honors Late Assistant Amy Cole at Emmys 2025

There is one person who remains close to Stephen Colbert’s heart.

Stephen Colbert, accepting the Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Series in 2025, paused to remember his longtime assistant, Amy Cole, who sadly passed away in March 2024 at age 53 after a short illness. Cole had worked with Colbert on *The Late Show* for over 15 years.

Stephen dedicated his speech to his parents and grandparents, and also remembered Amy Cole, saying, “She should be here tonight,” as his voice filled with emotion.

During his speech, the 61-year-old also expressed gratitude to his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, and their children, Madeline, Peter, and John. He then considered the impact his show will have, now that CBS cancelled it earlier this year.

Stephen remembers that in September 2015, Spike Jonze asked him, ‘What should this show be about?’ Stephen responded that he’d love to create a late-night comedy show focused on the topic of love, though he wasn’t sure how it could be done.

He admitted he never fully understood it, but eventually realized they were essentially creating a late-night comedy show centered around the theme of loss.

But ultimately, Stephen thinks he didn’t stray too far from his original goal.

He explained that this feeling connects to love, because we often don’t realize how much we care about something until we’re afraid of losing it. Ten years later, in September 2025, he said he’d never felt a stronger love for his country.

Stephen concluded his speech with a heartfelt “God bless America” and a nod to Prince, finishing with lyrics inspired by the song “Let’s Go Crazy.”

He encouraged them to remain strong and courageous, adding that if they felt overwhelmed, they should aggressively try to reach a better situation.

I was absolutely thrilled to see Erin Doherty win for her incredible work in ‘Adolescence’! The whole cast was amazing, but she truly stood out. Ruth Negga’s performance in ‘Presumed Innocent’ was captivating, and Deirdre O’Connell really brought something special to ‘The Penguin’. I also have to mention Chloë Sevigny, who was chillingly good in ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’, and Jenny Slate, who was surprisingly vulnerable in ‘Dying for Sex’. A big shout-out to Christine Tremarco as well, for her contributions to ‘Adolescence’ – what a talented group!

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been keeping a close eye on all the incredible performances this year! We had some serious contenders for this award, including the fantastic Giancarlo Esposito from *The Boys*, the always-brilliant Scott Glenn in *The White Lotus*, and Forest Whitaker delivering a powerful performance in *Andor*. Joe Pantoliano and Jeffrey Wright both shone in *The Last of Us*. But ultimately, the winner is Shawn Hatosy for his work in *The Pitt* – a truly deserving win!

The nominees for the award included Jane Alexander and Gwendoline Christie for *Severance*, Kaitlyn Dever and Catherine O’Hara for *The Last of Us*, and Cherry Jones for *The Handmaid’s Tale*. Merritt Wever won the award for her performance in *Severance*.

The winners were Bryan Cranston for *The Studio*. Nominees included Jon Bernthal, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie, and Martin Scorsese, all recognized for their work on *The Studio*.

Oh my gosh, the supporting actress race was *intense*! I was seriously rooting for Olivia Colman in *The Bear*, and Jamie Lee Curtis too! Both were incredible. Cynthia Erivo was a standout in *Poker Face*, honestly. Robby Hoffman in *Hacks* was a revelation, and Zoë Kravitz in *The Studio* just captivated me. But… but Julianne Nicholson *won* for *Hacks*! I mean, she’s amazing, don’t get me wrong, but I really thought it would be someone else! Still, so happy for her, even if my faves didn’t take it home!
