Each year, Marvel Comics introduces fresh heroes and villains. With the 2024 debut of the X-Men’s From the Ashes storyline, it’s no wonder that a number of new mutants have emerged on the comic book stage. A standout group, the Outliers, is garnering attention, but they’re not the only ones worth discussing. These fresh faces show great promise, and at least one prophecy seems to be connected to their tales. It’s natural that their abilities, personalities, and approaches differ significantly. Some are bright, cheerful characters, while others have a fascination with death, although maybe not in the way you’d initially think. Already, readers are starting to pick their favorites and those they could do without.
The ongoing storyline “From the Ashes” marks the latest X-Men saga, following the collapse of Krakoa. This new era brings a generation of mutants into existence amidst an atmosphere of apprehension, as mutantkind is compelled to reconcile with humanity. Some heroes embrace this change, while others are hesitant about their future course. The majority of these new characters can be found in either “Uncanny X-Men” or “Exceptional X-Men“, with a few originating from “X-Factor” and “NYX“. If you’re not keeping up with all four series, you might have missed their initial appearances.
10) Xyber (Daniel Choi)
Intro Series: X-Factor
As Xyber, or rather, Daniel Choi, I found myself joining the X-Factor team during their tenth issue. Being the youngest member, I must admit, I’ve managed to stir some heartstrings among the readers. My entry into the team was a bit sudden, stepping in to fill vacancies in the ever-changing roster – a testament to the turbulent times this team has been facing.
My debut mission took me to the Yardslac nuclear power plant, where I encountered a host of armed and potentially lethal adversaries. Needless to say, it was quite a baptism by fire for someone like me, but I’m more than ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead as part of this extraordinary team.
For young Daniel Choi, being a newly discovered mutant comes with an exciting power – the ability to generate powerful electromagnetic pulses. However, what he lacks is crucial knowledge about his own limits, possibly due to missing an assessment by Beast. This leaves him constantly worried that each significant burst could be his last, literally draining his life. His fear revolves around the possibility that his gift might one day fail, causing his heart to stop. Unfortunately, we can’t help but feel for this young man, who seems better off leading a tranquil life without the risks and dangers associated with action.
9.) Local (Real Name Unknown)
Intro Series: NYX
In the comic series NYX, a new character emerged who went by the name Local, though his true identity remains unknown. He wasn’t an official member of the X-Men, but he formed friendships with individuals like Kamala Khan. What we do know is that Local possesses techno-path abilities, which allow him to disrupt surveillance systems, connect various technologies, and cause all manner of mischief in the digital realm. It was because of these skills that Mr. Friend (a proxy for Mojo) singled out the young mutant for targeting.
In some instances, it seemed as though Local was either deceased or permanently trapped in Mojo’s machinations. However, NYX’s actions managed to dismantle Mojo, indirectly liberating Local. Local chose to engage in the battle and ended up making the ultimate sacrifice. But there are doubts about his demise; they suggest he faked it. Instead of perishing, Local merged with the city on a profound level, with his consciousness being transferred into the urban landscape itself. There’s speculation that he might continue living this way, similar to Danny the Street from DC Comics.
8.) Axo (Alejandro Mateo Luna)
Intro Series: Exceptional X-Men
Alejandro Mateo Luna, commonly known as Alex, is a young mutant who made his debut in Exceptional X-Men. Known for his compassionate nature, Alex unfortunately stands out as a mutant following the rise and fall of Krakoa. His extraordinary power lies in his ability to perceive and manipulate emotions around him. This allows him to make people reveal their deepest secrets or weaknesses, and even induce specific feelings within them – a skill that is reflected by changes in the color of his skin. However, it’s worth noting that Alex often finds himself grappling with controlling this power, much like Rogue did during her early days.
Among three unique individuals, Alex is one who commences mentorship under Kate Pryde. This journey started when a peer attempted to shield him from bullying, yet inadvertently worsened the predicament, leading Kate to intervene. Since then, they’ve been learning under Kate, as well as Emma Frost and occasionally Iceman. As part of this emerging team, Alex assumed the role of Axo. Despite his current hesitance about the superhero scenario, recent occurrences might alter his viewpoint.
7.) Melee (Thao Tran)
Intro Series: Exceptional X-Men
You might recall the student who stepped in to aid Alex? That was Thao Tran. Upon witnessing his mistreatment due to being a mutant, she felt compelled to act, given her shared condition. Unfortunately, her intervention didn’t turn out as planned. However, it did manage to draw attention from Kate Pryde, who eventually consented to tutor the trio of teenagers. Thao is known for her strong-willed and resilient personality, always advocating for others.
Thao Tran possesses two unique talents that complement each other. Initially, she can become incorporeal, enabling her to move through people and things. This discovery led Thao to Kate Pryde, who turned out to be an invaluable instructor for this young mutant. Additionally, she has the ability to become invisible, though she currently seems to have limited control over it.
6.) Bronze (Trista Marshall)
Intro Series: Exceptional X-Men
In the storyline of “Exceptional X-Men“, Trista Marshall is the initial mutant character introduced. At a concert, Trista and Kate Pryde crossed paths, a situation that required them to collaborate to escape an anti-mutant enforcer and his spectral entity safely. Initially, Kate aimed to drop off Trista and move on, but things didn’t go as planned in Trista’s perspective. She saw Kate as a potential mentor, someone she felt drawn to after this encounter.
When Kate presented Trista to Thao and Alex, I swiftly assembled them into a trio and persuaded them that they’d benefit immensely from having me as their combined guide. And so, the story goes, from that moment forward. As a budding mutant champion, Trista christened herself Bronze, paying tribute to her unique power of transforming her skin into a robust, bronze-like substance. In this form, she’s remarkably durable and strong; all she requires now is combat training. Furthermore, she possesses the ability to generate retractable cables crafted from the same material, enabling her to attack from a distance.
5.) Ransom (Valentin Correa)
Intro Series: Uncanny X-Men
In numerous aspects, Valentin Correa stands out as the most assertive among The Outliers, frequently projecting an aura of leadership. Hailing from Argentina, this extraordinary individual was born without a physical heart – literally, there’s a void where his heart should be, similar to a black hole. This unique condition allows him to withstand attacks and redirect force through his hands, thus possessing both offensive and defensive abilities.
Valentin had a troubled upbringing because he was abducted at a tender age, which led to his parents choosing not to pay the ransom. The trauma from this experience may have triggered his abilities, causing him to eliminate his captors. This could be why he chose Ransom as his superhero alias. Ransom is young and driven, and it’s evident that he values his team highly. He has been observed giving them safety instructions and encouraging them to respect one another’s feelings. It’s no surprise that he frequently appears to lead the group.
4.) Jitter (Sofia Yong)
Intro Series: Uncanny X-Men
Sofia Yong journeyed to the United States from Singapore, much like the others in her freshly formed circle, we are not privy to the specifics of her arrival. However, what sets Sofia apart is an extraordinary talent: she can quickly grasp any skill, though this ability lasts just a minute. This trait served her well academically, enabling her to excel in exams and similar tasks. Unfortunately, it didn’t fare as successfully when she attempted to employ it in self-defense against bullies, resulting in unintended harm to one of them. What truly distinguishes Sofia among her new companions is a tendency towards stuttering when she feels less certain or conversing with new people.
Now, Jitter is part of The Outliers, having previously been pursued by the Hag. Adopting this new identity, she’s discovered the boundaries of her potential. Essentially, she has the capacity to master a wide range of skills – from physical talents such as martial arts and acrobatics to linguistic abilities and more. Frequently practicing in specific areas like hand-to-hand combat and acrobatics has enhanced her proficiency in those skills.
3.) Deathdream (Hotoru)
Intro Series: Uncanny X-Men
Hotoru, also known as Deathdream, is a potent mutant who has chosen to live in the realm of death. On the day he was born, he died four times, and ever since then, he possesses the ability to switch between life and death at his discretion. He commands spirits, yet battles with hiding his deep-seated darkness. It’s unclear how Hotoru wound up in the United States or joined The Outliers, but it’s clear that he has discovered a sense of belonging within this group. The rare instances when Hotoru shows vulnerability are exclusively with this group, such as his attempts to be compassionate towards Calico and her predicament.
Through the ability to manipulate ghostly entities, a skill passed down by his late mother, Deathdream can perform various feats, including allowing these spirits to take over his physical form in order to utilize their skills. Being intimately connected with death grants Hotoru an immunity towards toxic substances and an enhanced healing rate. It’s also worth noting that he is not easily kept down for long by death itself.
2.) Calico (Becca Constance Simon-Pinette)
Intro Series: Uncanny X-Men
Becca Constance Simon-Pinette, known as Calico within The Outliers, is the latest mutant to join the Uncanny X-Men roster. Despite her sheltered upbringing, it’s evident that her past was marked by fear and abuse. When she eventually escapes with The Outliers, she continues to deny being a mutant. However, over time, she comes to terms with her identity as a mutant and learns to embrace this aspect of herself.
Calico shares an extraordinary bond with her horse, Ember, which goes beyond the ordinary. To put it simply, neither Calico nor Ember are entirely normal. With a thought, Calico can summon Ember, craft protective armor for them both, and even generate psychic flames. Given her abilities, she could potentially be the strongest among her peers, but she’s still grappling with internal obstacles. Nonetheless, with Jitter by her side and the bond they share with Ember, there seems to be little that Calico can’t accomplish if she truly desires it.
1.) Granny Smite (Real Name Unknown)
Intro Series: X-Factor
To put it simply, the oldest person on this list is none other than Granny Smite. Although she’s far from youthful, she’s only just discovered her unique mutant power. In a strange sense, she can be considered one of the newest members. Granny Smite’s background is heart-wrenching. She possesses an immortal and invincible nature, a truth she uncovered only after a terrible event – her house caught fire, trapping both her and her husband inside. Regrettably, her husband didn’t survive, but Granny Smite did.
Tragically, that unfortunate event was just the start of her troubles. A single incident could be attributed to chance or a miracle, but in this case, she found herself on a plane with her grandson and his family, which crashed, claiming everyone else’s life except hers. This near-death experience confirmed her belief in her unique abilities. Alone in the world now, Granny Smite decided to join X-Factor, hoping they would place her in a dangerous situation that would finally end her life. Despite the somber backstory, Granny Smite has captured the hearts of many viewers, and with X-Factor coming to an end, fans are eagerly awaiting her appearance in another show.
