Director Matt Reeves has revealed a significant absence from the cast of *The Batman: Part II*, a decision that could be a major setback for the sequel. Reeves’ Batman films exist separately from the new DC Universe being created by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and feature Robert Pattinson as Batman and Colin Farrell as the Penguin (who will also star in *The Penguin* series). While the 2022 film *The Batman* was widely praised, this casting choice might be the sequel’s first big error.
I’m really excited for *The Batman: Part II*, currently slated for release on October 1, 2027! Thankfully, Matt Reeves is back directing, and it sounds like Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell are all returning, which is fantastic. I loved the first film, seeing Bruce Wayne go up against the Riddler and how it exposed Gotham’s corruption. The *Penguin* spin-off series was also great, really diving into Oz Cobb’s battles with the Falcone family. But, sadly, it looks like one of the best things about the first TV series connected to this whole Batman universe won’t be returning for the sequel, which is a bit of a bummer.
Sofia Falcone Won’t Be in The Batman: Part II
Cristin Milioti recently won an Emmy for her portrayal of Sofia Falcone in *The Penguin*, a role that received widespread acclaim. Sofia, the daughter of Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in *The Batman* and Mark Strong in *The Penguin*), was believed to be a dangerous serial killer. After her father’s death, she took control of the Falcone crime family and renamed it the Gigante family, after her mother’s family name. While Sofia was a frightening villain in *The Penguin*, she won’t be appearing in *The Batman: Part II*, according to director Matt Reeves who confirmed this to *MTV*.
I got all my Batman questions answered by Matt Reeves! He talked about what’s next for Cristin Milioti’s character and whether we’ll see more seasons of The Penguin. Plus, a quick mention of the Emmys with Joshua Horowitz.

According to Reeves, Cristin Milioti won’t be in *The Batman: Part II* because the script was already well underway when *The Penguin* series premiered on HBO Max. Apparently, the popularity of Milioti’s character, Sofia Falcone, exceeded expectations, and she hadn’t been included in the initial drafts for the sequel. As a result, she won’t be part of the film. However, Reeves has expressed interest in working with her in the future, leaving the door open for Sofia Falcone to reappear in a later project after *The Penguin*.
The Penguin Probably Won’t Be the End For Sofia Falcone
I just finished watching *The Penguin*, and it was a fascinating look at Sofia Gigante’s journey after getting out of Arkham. We see her discover she was wrongly imprisoned, but also how her time inside really warped her – she fully embraces becoming a villain. However, it’s Oz Cobb who *really* pulls the strings, even managing to outmaneuver Sofia herself. The finale sees her back in Arkham, seemingly wrapping up her arc, but the very last scene definitely left the door open for her return in future Batman-related projects. It’s a clever tease that makes you wonder what’s next for her.
In the final episode of *The Penguin*, Sofia Gigante received a letter from her half-sister, Selina Kyle (Catwoman, played by Zoë Kravitz in *The Batman*). Though there’s been some question about whether Kravitz will reprise her role in *The Batman: Part II*, the sequel could reveal more about Selina’s past and her ties to the Falcone family. Because filming hasn’t started on *The Batman: Part II* yet, actress Cristin Milioti could potentially be added to the cast. There’s also talk about a second season of *The Penguin*, which could be another opportunity for Selina to reappear.
How the DCU’s New Batman Will Be Different From Matt Reeves’ Version
Cristin Milioti’s unique take on Sofia Gigante will likely appear in future installments of Matt Reeves’ *The Batman* universe, continuing to build that world in exciting ways. At the same time, James Gunn and Peter Safran are planning a completely new Batman for their revamped DC Universe. Because Reeves’ Batman films are so dark and realistic, the new Batman will probably be more upbeat and colorful, allowing him to fit in with other heroes like David Corenswet’s Superman and John Cena’s Peacemaker.
We’ve briefly seen Batman in the DCU in Creature Commandos, and he’s expected to officially appear in The Brave and the Bold. Given the popularity of the version of Sofia Falcone played by Milioti, it’s unlikely a new take on the character will be introduced. Therefore, it’s important that the Sofia Falcone from The Penguin returns. While The Brave and the Bold will probably feature other powerful female villains like Talia al Ghul, Sofia Falcone’s role is uncertain after she was left out of The Batman: Part II.
