Back in 2021, when Netflix picked up the action movie *The Ice Road*, few expected it to launch a series of films. However, *The Ice Road* proved surprisingly popular with viewers around the world, quietly leading to a sequel that many fans didn’t even know was in the works. Now, that sequel has arrived and is currently the most popular movie on Netflix.
The action movie *Ice Road: Vengeance* recently appeared on Netflix without much promotion, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming a hit. It quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s most-watched movie list, claiming the number one spot.
The most popular movie on Netflix as of Tuesday is *Ice Road: Vengeance*, which jumped to number one, surpassing the romantic comedy *The Wrong Paris*. *The Wrong Paris* had been the top movie since it was released on Friday. It seems fans enjoyed the original *Ice Road* movie and were quick to watch the sequel when it became available.
What Is Ice Road: Vengeance About?
The original *Ice Road* movie featured Liam Neeson as Mike McCann, a driver who leads a team of truckers across a frozen lake to rescue miners. The story was inspired by the film *The Wages of Fear*, which follows truckers transporting nitroglycerin – a highly explosive substance – on treacherous roads.
Ice Road: Vengeance isn’t a direct continuation of the first movie’s story or setting. Instead, the sequel follows Mike as he travels to Mount Everest to honor his deceased brother by scattering his ashes. During a tour in Nepal, his bus is taken over by armed mercenaries, forcing Mike to fight to protect himself and the other passengers. You can find a summary of the film on Netflix.
Mike, an ice road trucker, sets out on a journey to Everest to spread his brother’s ashes. However, his trip is interrupted when mercenaries take over, forcing him to fight for survival.
It’s currently unclear whether Liam Neeson will star in another *Ice Road* movie. The director, Jonathan Hensleigh, wants to work with him again, and a successful run on streaming platforms like Netflix (and Prime Video in the UK) could make a third film happen.
